Scam Alert: Emblem Images, Production Jobs

There are a LOT of industry scams preying on people hoping for a career in film and television. They’ve been going around for years, but they’ve been particularly prevalent in 2017, 2018, and 2019.

The worst part? The scammers use the names of REAL industry professionals. Remember, the people listed here aren’t the actual scammers– they are victims, too.

**Current imposter name list as of May 2019:

  • Johann Martinez
  • Matthew Schwartz
  • Clement Cheung (Mei Ah Entertainment)
  • Chris Galipo
  • Gabriel Tyner
  • Matthew Bates (Emblem Entertainment)
  • Grant Bell
  • Brandon Taylor
  • Alan Parker
  • Graham Rich (Rich Tint Production/Film/Director)
  • Louis Rogers (Visuals by Clever Chim)
  • Boris Cifuentes
  • Brad Cruz
  • Michael LeBlanc
  • Beatrice Mercy
  • Rebel Production Studios
  • Rufus Cannon
  • Ryan Chandler
  • Robert Alexander
  • Gung-Ho Film Productions
  • Jean-Luc B. from Mar Vivo Films
  • Steve Gonzalez from Eyes and Ears Productions
  • Chikki Media Productions
  • Donald Chan at CREATV Company
  • Jean-Alexandre Luciani of Eastness Productions
  • Moviola
  • Emblem Images
  • Richard Chan – Hurrah

How does the scam work?

These guys find the information of real professionals from real job sites, film crew databases, and local state and city film directories. It begins with an innocuous text message or e-mail, “Hi, I found your information on Mandy.com/Workbook/ *Film Crew Directory Here* and think you’d be a great fit, please send me your resume”. They’ll offer you a strange rate and maybe give a few other bizarre details.

You e-mail your resume, and then you get a length reply (see below). It can be for any number of positions beyond production assistant — there’s been reports of the scam offering a position as an editor, boom operator, makeup artist, screenwriter, or camera op.

How the scam actually works: After applying (the application requires you submit your mailing address), you will receive a check within 2-3 business days for around $3,000. The scammer will ask that you deposit this check in your bank account and use the money to make some sort of dubious $500-$1000 purchase. What actually happens? The scammer voids the check, and you’re on the hook for the $500-$1000 purchase.

How to tell it’s a scam: Grammatical and spelling errors. There’s also an over explanation of expectations and job descriptions. After personally being a freelance hire for ten years, in my past experience, all details are discussed in person or over the phone. With these scams, though, there’s a lack of any sort of personal connection that is very unusual. Any real industry professional is going to want to talk to you on the phone to ensure you’re competent. **UPDATE: As of September 2017, some particularly bold scammers will actually call you on the phone. **UPDATE: As of April 2019, their grammar has gotten much better and they’re much more succinct. See bullet points below.

If you think you’ve been the victim of a production scam, alert your bank immediately.

How the scammer finds victims

The scam started on Craigslist, but unfortunately, the scammers also now prowl job boards and sites where freelancers find work. Examples may include Mandy.com, ziprecruiter.com, film industry crew lists (including on state and local film commission websites), or productionbeast.com.

(In my ten years in this career, I am yet to receive a job offer through any of those sites — it’s almost always through word of mouthAs a producer who hires crew, I never hire anyone through any of those sites. It’s usually through word of mouth or FB hiring groups.)

Remember:

  • Scammers will pose as a real company or production person, and will direct you to a legit website. Their e-mail address never has the same domain as the legit web address for the company they are impersonating; a letter may be omitted or added.
  • If a company offers direct deposit, you will receive a form in person on your start date; it will never be requested in advance via email.
  • NEVER accept advance checks from companies you’ve applied to onlineIf they want you to pay for anything in advance, ask them to call ahead and put it on their credit card.
  • If something seems off, it probably is.

The Scam as of April 2019:

There is a savvier version of this same scam floating around. Some folks might still be sending out the very wordy emails (see below), but some have picked up on brevity:

“Emblem Images would like you to join our team as a production assistant for a Ben Sherman photo shoot in San Francisco, CA as you came highly recommended by a production website linked with indeed.com.

The shoot date is September 22nd to 24th, your flight will be scheduled to leave by 11:30am on September 22nd as you’re required to work from September 22nd to 24th. Work hours are between 6pm to 1am and pay is $350 daily, so a check for $1050 will be issued at the end of the production, you’ll also receive $350 as per diem to cater for your meals throughout the shoot and this check will be issued early next week.

Send a reply if you’re available and interested in the shoot, thanks.”

This is much sleeker, but it doesn’t fall in line with the bullet points above.

  1. I just got a text message from (775)384-0957, and it said “Hey Tayler, how are you doing. Sorry to reach out to you this late. I’m William Bashan with Umoon Productions. I got your contact off the Reel Network as MUA. I hope the pandemic situation hasn’t been too rough on you.” He also talked about the project being a short project during the week of Thanksgiving which I also thought was weird, so I asked him if there were plans for a shoot day to be on thanksgiving and he replied very short. I didn’t think anything of it at first and I just sent him my resume to an AOL email.. which was what kinda tipped me off because what production company wouldn’t use Gmail but okay.. I decided to Google uMoon productions and they are a production company based in Bangkok. I then looked up William Bashan and found this article. Stay aware guys! Thankfully I didn’t follow through with anything else.

I was really needing that $700/day rate though.

    • Yeah Taylor same thing happened to me, just figured it out just now. Fuck, I could have used that rate if it was legit. At least I’m glad I didn’t fall for it all the way.

    • Ok so I am so glad you shared this! He just texted me yesterday for work in December!!! It is literally word for word what you copied and pasted! Like you I needed that rate too, And was worried about the AOL email address but I’m so glad to see my suspicions were right!

    • Got the same one and went through the same path. Told him I’m staying pretty busy so I’d need to know the rate, whether they were looking to rent camera package, more details before holding dates and he just pointed me to that aol email address.

    • So I got one of these too and my question is this: what did he gain from this? He never asked for my bank info to supposedly wire the money and never asked for information that wasn’t readily available in basic social media. So again- why do it in the first place and what did he have to gain?

    • I just got a text from a Chris Toban with Little Bee Productions which is also out of Bangcock. I have chosen not to respond as something felt off.

    • Saame here. Blocked 775 446 4777. wanted to know if I was a PA and offer production services.

  2. Yup, same for me, with that incredible and obviously no way, no how pay rate. Thanks so much for your article on this website about the scam!!!

    • Just got contacted from +1 (775) 446-4777. Number came up as Las Vegas.

  3. I also was contacted by William Bashan from Umoon Productions. Glad I saw this before wasting my time on it. I’m copying and pasting everything he said here, because it exactly matches what’s been written to others.

“Hey ____, how are you doing today. So glad to reach out to you. I’m William Bashan with Umoon Productions. I got your contact off the Reel Network as Camera Operator/Assistant. I hope the pandemic situation hasn’t been too rough on you.”

“Thanks for the response. Awesome, we have a short Project shoot between 14th-20th of December. I was hoping you can hold the dates & position if you will be available for the shoot.”

“I’m Sorry for the late response, I’ve been on a very busy set. It would be super if you can shoot your resume/work info. to me at umoonproductions@aol.com so I’ll send in the necessary details for the shoot along with our company info. Thanks so much”

  5. Hi! The same thing just happened to me. They found my email on a website. I sent the resume. It was really long and the pay was too good. I noticed it wasn’t from someone fluent in English bc they wanted to send me money to buy “gears” even when it was a post-production job. They used the name of a real person with a real imdb profile in the email. Along with a script by Johann Martinez. The production company was based in Egypt

  6. I have a question. If you buy the stuff and keep it, how do they benefit?

    • Maria: they ask you to send some of the money to another “crew member” or “rental company.” Because you are local and they are overseas, so it’s easier for you. Of course you will send real money before their check bounces.

  9. I got the same text “ Hey Jennifer, I hope you had a great day. So glad to reach out to you. I’m Chris Toban with Little Bee Production. I got your contact off the Reel Network as Camera Operator/AC. I’d like to enquire and confirm about the position.” I was weirded out cause I don’t think I’m in any “reel network” a saw little bee is in Thailand. I then googled and found this post (thanks team, at least we have each other). I responded calling them out And saying I would report them – it’s depressing that people would want to take advantage of freelance filmmakers especially with the dreadful year we have all had. Thanks for watching out for each other!

  11. I want to thank everyone so much for sharing their stories on this. Such a shame that these scammers are going around. I got a text message from “Chris Toban” from Little Bee Productions a few days ago. I sent him my resume (he even said he was impressed) and he replied with the following message in regards to offering me a PA job. Stay safe out there, everyone. The pay was way too good to be true.

“I got your email response and I must say I’m impressed with your work. So sorry for the delayed response. The pandemic situation has been a real handful and we’re basically adjusting to the precautions regarding production within the states as best we can. I’m Chris Toban, the production coordinator with Little Bee Productions. We’re currently working simultaneously on a project in two states at the moment but I’m on a set in Nevada shooting a documentary film project close to the Mojave. We’re about two weeks in on the shoot so we expect to round off in about a week or two from now so we can have enough time to prepare for the next project coming up, the date for the shoot is planned to be between the 18th-24th of January.

Our location’s manager will contact you about the set location as soon as we have it locked-down prior to our arrival. The title of the shoot is “A place beyond”. Most of the shooting will be on the set put together for the shooting days. I will email you the script to go through in my next email so you can get familiar with the cast along with their roles. I would love for you to take the essential responsibility as our project Production Assistant and also receive some Production equipment before we arrive(so as to have it setup at the location set if need be).

We are having a little set back because our main PA had a minor accident on set and won’t be able to operate for a few weeks, we found a replacement but isn’t doing as good as expected. I want someone who can think outside the box, perform their duties with resourcefulness, be proactive with damage control, and of course, do better than our present PA hire. We will be kicking-off the shoot with a two-day group-meet which will commence on the 11th & 12th of January, just about a week before the shoot date. This is so we can meet and also prepare by going over the whole project so we don’t have any lapse in duties and responsibilities. we’ll have the production set put together the week of the meetings just before the initial start date. We’re taking care of the things needed for the project and I’ll be sure to keep you informed of our activities and also prepare a shooting & the work schedule for the production days.

I implore that you be available for both meeting days or at least either so as to make the process run smoothly. Your wage for being a part of the Group meetings will be $1450 for both days and half for 1 day. I will take the necessary steps and have the financial advisor have your paycheck mailed to you as a retainer fee and to secure your availability for the postulated date. The paycheck will cover the Production equipment as well as the group meeting pay. I’m in talks with a vendor that will supply all that will be used for the shoot, I will provide you the information on that when I conclude. I would like for you to know that daily payment (and possible bonuses depending on ethics) for the 7-day shoot will be given at each day’s end at $700/day rate. I have attached a PDF contact document to this email. Please provide the information requested in the attachment by having it filled-out and returned to me for profile documentation and payroll listing. You can leave-out the SSN Detail in the form as well.

More information will be given about the project as we go along and wrap up this present shoot. I will forward the script to you in my next email for you to go through as well as a Deal Memo for you to sign and send back to me as a contract agreement.

    Project Budget : $(900,000-1,200,000)

    Daily Pay : $(500-2500)

    Meeting Expense : $1450(Fixed)

    Days : 7 Days

    Hours : 6-10 Hrs/Day

    Contract Type : Temporary/Part-Time

Thanks so much and looking forward to working with you. You can check out our safety precautions for production shoots on the website.

    • how do we report scammers privately to this site

  12. Wow, from what I’m reading here business is BOOMING in Thailand! I just received this text from definite soon to be festival favorite Rubber Knife Productions, out of Bangkok:

“Hello Robb, how’s the Valentine weekend?? I’m so glad to reach out to you & I hope you’re staying as safe as possible. I’m Chris Kurah with Rubber Knife Productions. I got your contact off the Reel Network as Camera Operator/AC. How’re you dealing with the Covid situation.”

Sweet of them to reach out on Valentine’s Day.

The production company does exist, though I didn’t see Chris listed on their website nor could I find him on LinkedIn. The area code is from Nevada, as well.

    Phone number- 775-384-0957

I received a similar scam text about a year and a half ago and did send my resume, but their email address was a yahoo or gmail address instead of one with the domain name of the company website, which I thought was strange. I didn’t communicate anymore after that. That was my first time seeing this kind of scam.

    • I got this text from the same number listed on these comments (775-384-0957).

Hello (my name), how’s your weekend?? I’m glad to reach out to you & I hope you’re staying as safe as possible. I’m Chris Kamada with Samaza Production. I got your contact off the BTL Network as Production Assistant. How’re you dealing with the Covid situation.

I asked about the job location and rate. He gave me a rate and dates he wanted me to hold, and I told him I’d need to know location, and also that my info on that site was very outdated.

He then responded with: Payrate for PA position is $500/day, I’m on a very busy set. It would be super if you can shoot your resume/portfolio to me at kamada@samazaproduction.com so I’ll send in the necessary details for the shoot along with our company info. Thanks so much.

The company is based in Thailand. Apparently that the hot spot to pick companies from for these scams.

This time he used the real email address. I emailed and heard nothing, then texted to see if he got the email, and still heard nothing.

      Beware!

  13. I got a similar message now, slightly different but same name and website, same source to find me mentioned. They texted my Google voice number this time (that’s what’s now on that production website) and it was from a different number-786- 353-3541. —————-

Hey hi Chris, I got your email response and I must say I’m impressed with your work. So sorry for the delayed response. The Covid situation has been a real handful and we’re basically adjusting to the precautions regarding production within the states as best we can. I’m Jamal Kassan, the production coordinator with Kantana Group. We’re currently working simultaneously on a project in two states at the moment but I’m on a set in Nevada shooting a documentary film project close to the Mojave. We’re about two weeks in on the shoot so we expect to round off in about a week or two from now so we can have enough time to prepare for the next project coming up, the date for the shoot is planned to be between the 10th to the 16th of May.

Our location’s manager will contact you about the specifics of the set location as soon as we have it locked prior to our arrival. The title of the shoot is “A place beyond”, It’s a simple sci-fi short, most of the shooting will be on the set put together for the shooting days. I will email you the script to go through in my next email so you can get familiar with the cast along with their roles. I would love for you to take the essential responsibility as our project Camera Operator and also receive Camera equipment before we arrive(so as to have it setup at the location set if need be), I assume you can handle securing equipment, payments, and delivery, let me know if you’re not capable so i can find a replacement in time.

We are having a little set back because our main CamOp contracted the Covid virus but not on set and won’t be able to operate for a few weeks , we found a replacement but isn’t doing as good as expected. I want someone who can follow instructions, think outside the box, perform their duties with resourcefulness, be proactive with damage control, and of course, do better than our present CamOp hire. We will be kicking-off the shoot with a two-day group-meet which will commence on the 3rd & 4th of May , just about a week before the shoot date.

Your wage for being a part of the Group meetings will be $1050 for both days and half for 1 day which will cover per-diem, transportation and feeding. I will take the necessary steps and have the financial advisor have your paycheck mailed to you as a retainer fee and to secure your availability for the postulated date. The paycheck will cover the Camera equipment as well as the group meeting pay. I’m in talks with a vendor that will supply the necessary equipment for the shoot, I will provide you the information on that when I conclude. Do leave-out the SSN Detail in the form as well.

More information will be given about the project as we go along and wrap up this present shoot. I will forward the script to you in my next email for you to go through as well as a Deal Memo for you to sign and send back to me as a contract agreement.

    Project Budget : $(900,000-1,200,000)

    Daily Pay : $(500-3500)

    Meeting Expense : $1050(Fixed)

    Days : 7 Days

    Hours : 6-10 Hrs/Day

    Contract Type : Temporary/Part-Time

Thanks so much and looking forward to working with you. I can email you our Covid safety precautions & guidelines for production shoot much later.
    Best Regards

    • I got this one as well! The pay was WAY too high to be real. They have went so far as to send me a check (even with all of my questioning), but it is floppy, doesn’t feel like a normal check, and there is no colors on the back or watermark. The guy has started texting from a new number today. No last names have ever been given and there are NO signatures or names on any emails. They have answered NO questions that I have asked and refused to call me. numbers were 213-732-7861 and 213-204-2113
Oliver McArthur and Patrice are the only names that have been written so far. Glad I finally found this because usually I can find info on scams pretty fast and this one must be really new.

    • We got the same exact email, word for word. Got a fake cashiers check today for $3950 even though they said $400.

Got a text right after it was delivered giving us instructions on how to deposit check.

Envelope address is Miami, tracking comes from CO, and all phone numbers come from Los Angeles.

  26. I am an Indiana DJ about 90 minutes outside of Chicago. “Riccardo Anderson” just contacted me via text to my cell phone about 30 minutes ago! (12/10/22)
Claiming to have found me on Yelp, he asked if I was amenable to working a three day commercial shoot in Chicago in about 7 weeks. I replied and within 5 minutes received an email with almost the exact same text as Martin got, with the dates changed to January 2023 and Chicago as the location.
There’s still a little bit of broken English but the scammers are timely with the live replies and casually conversational. Head’s up… ARTEX Films is a real company and their real website is a dotCOM. The scammer’s email & link were a dotUS clone of the real one. They are really getting sophisticated

    • I just got a text from Riccardo from Artex film today. Same deal, want to pay me $4500 to DJ for a few days. Same email with .us , not .com. I will delete it.

      So glad I found this!!!

  28. Both blogs and articles can be monetized, but the methods differ. Bloggers often monetize their content through advertising, sponsorships, affiliate marketing, or by creating and selling their products or services. Many bloggers generate income through platforms like Google AdSense or by partnering with brands. Articles, especially those published on news websites and magazines, may generate revenue through subscriptions, paywalls, or advertisements placed directly on the publication’s website.

  30. First text messages where fine. But when the spelling feels a bit off always google more. Thanks for everyone here, stoped before any major info was sent. The CGPT talk sank it.

    The email:

Thank you for working with us on this
    POLYBONA FILMS
We will respond to all inquiries and correspondence within 2 business days.
    BONA FILM GROUP.

I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to personally thank you for your prompt response. I had the chance to take a look at some of your work, and I must say, I’m quite impressed. My apologies for the slight delay in getting back to you. My name is Michael Pratt, and I’m the production coordinator at Polybona Films.

I’m thrilled to inform you that we’ve been closely following your achievements, and we believe your skills align perfectly with our ongoing and upcoming projects. Currently, we’re managing a production that spans two states simultaneously. I find myself on a film set in Nevada, where we’re shooting a documentary film. We’re already two weeks into the shoot, and we anticipate wrapping up in another two weeks. This schedule will allow us ample time to prepare for our next project, which is slated to take place between the 19th to the 28th of February.

Our location manager will be in touch to provide you with all the details regarding the set location once everything is finalized. The project is titled “A Place Beyond,” a captivating sci-fi short. The majority of the filming will take place on a custom-built set that we’ve assembled specifically for these shooting days. In my next email, I’ll send you the script so that you can become acquainted with the characters and their roles.

I’m excited to offer you a vital role as our Boom operator for this project. Additionally, we’d appreciate your assistance in handling some essential sound equipment as funds will be provided to you before our arrival. This will ensure everything is in order on the location set if needed. Given your experience in sound equipment coordination in previous productions, I’m confident you’ll excel in this responsibility.

I regret to inform you that we’ve encountered a setback. Our main operator recently suffered a loss and won’t be available for some time. Our replacement hire from the last shoot hasn’t met our expectations either. We’re seeking an individual who can execute instructions seamlessly, exhibit resourcefulness, proactively address challenges, and essentially outperform our current hire.

The project will commence with a two-day group meeting on February 12th and 13th, just days before the shoot itself. This meeting will be crucial in ensuring everyone is aligned and prepared for their respective responsibilities. The production set will be set up in the week leading up to these meetings. Please make every effort to be available for at least one of these days to facilitate a smooth process. For your participation, you’ll receive a per diem of $1050, which will cover transportation, meals, and other incidentals before and during this period.

Your daily wage for the 10-day shoot will be $750, paid at the end of each day. To facilitate this process, kindly fill out the attached PDF contact document. Additionally, we require a clear copy of your ID (both sides) for verification purposes. This information is necessary for your profile documentation and payroll listing.

As the project progresses, you’ll receive further details. I’ll send you the script and a Deal Memo in my next email, which you can sign and return to formalize our agreement. The project budget falls within the range of $900,000 to $1,200,000.

I appreciate your understanding as I navigate through limited reception on location. I seek to ensure seamless communication and I will give you a call regardless.

Thank you for considering this opportunity, I eagerly await your response and the chance to work together. If you have any questions or need further clarification, don’t hesitate to reach out. I look forward to hearing back from you.

    Best regards,
