There are a LOT of industry scams preying on people hoping for a career in film and television. They’ve been going around for years, but they’ve been particularly prevalent in 2017, 2018, and 2019.
The worst part? The scammers use the names of REAL industry professionals. Remember, the people listed here aren’t the actual scammers– they are victims, too.

How does the scam work?
These guys find the information of real professionals from real job sites, film crew databases, and local state and city film directories. It begins with an innocuous text message or e-mail, “Hi, I found your information on Mandy.com/Workbook/ *Film Crew Directory Here* and think you’d be a great fit, please send me your resume”. They’ll offer you a strange rate and maybe give a few other bizarre details.
You e-mail your resume, and then you get a length reply (see below). It can be for any number of positions beyond production assistant — there’s been reports of the scam offering a position as an editor, boom operator, makeup artist, screenwriter, or camera op.
How the scam actually works: After applying (the application requires you submit your mailing address), you will receive a check within 2-3 business days for around $3,000. The scammer will ask that you deposit this check in your bank account and use the money to make some sort of dubious $500-$1000 purchase. What actually happens? The scammer voids the check, and you’re on the hook for the $500-$1000 purchase.
How to tell it’s a scam: Grammatical and spelling errors. There’s also an over explanation of expectations and job descriptions. After personally being a freelance hire for ten years, in my past experience, all details are discussed in person or over the phone. With these scams, though, there’s a lack of any sort of personal connection that is very unusual. Any real industry professional is going to want to talk to you on the phone to ensure you’re competent. **UPDATE: As of September 2017, some particularly bold scammers will actually call you on the phone. **UPDATE: As of April 2019, their grammar has gotten much better and they’re much more succinct. See bullet points below.
If you think you’ve been the victim of a production scam, alert your bank immediately.
How the scammer finds victims
The scam started on Craigslist, but unfortunately, the scammers also now prowl job boards and sites where freelancers find work. Examples may include Mandy.com, ziprecruiter.com, film industry crew lists (including on state and local film commission websites), or productionbeast.com.
(In my ten years in this career, I am yet to receive a job offer through any of those sites — it’s almost always through word of mouth. As a producer who hires crew, I never hire anyone through any of those sites. It’s usually through word of mouth or FB hiring groups.)
Remember:
- Scammers will pose as a real company or production person, and will direct you to a legit website. Their e-mail address never has the same domain as the legit web address for the company they are impersonating; a letter may be omitted or added.
- If a company offers direct deposit, you will receive a form in person on your start date; it will never be requested in advance via email.
- NEVER accept advance checks from companies you’ve applied to online. If they want you to pay for anything in advance, ask them to call ahead and put it on their credit card.
- If something seems off, it probably is.
The Scam as of April 2019:
There is a savvier version of this same scam floating around. Some folks might still be sending out the very wordy emails (see below), but some have picked up on brevity:
“Emblem Images would like you to join our team as a production assistant for a Ben Sherman photo shoot in San Francisco, CA as you came highly recommended by a production website linked with indeed.com.
The shoot date is September 22nd to 24th, your flight will be scheduled to leave by 11:30am on September 22nd as you’re required to work from September 22nd to 24th. Work hours are between 6pm to 1am and pay is $350 daily, so a check for $1050 will be issued at the end of the production, you’ll also receive $350 as per diem to cater for your meals throughout the shoot and this check will be issued early next week.
Send a reply if you’re available and interested in the shoot, thanks.”
This is much sleeker, but it doesn’t fall in line with the bullet points above.

Wow, I’m glad this helped!! I can’t believe how widespread this scam is. The film office in Nevada has seen it a lot too, and I’ve seen it brought up at least 10-15 times elsewhere in the last couple of weeks. Interesting that they are trying to hire a full film crew with this, good heads up.

Hi, this is the real Matthew Schwartz in Atlanta. Over a dozen people have contacted me about jobs that I am not offering. PLEASE DON’T SEND ANY PERSONAL INFO TO ANYONE THAT SEEMS FISHY.
Unfortunately I was hit with the Johann Martinez scam. I think it originated from Film and TV Pro. I replied once and immediately recognized it as BS (“Johann” would not give me his phone number). My accounts were not hacked but they take public profile data and auto-generate messages. They created an email account mathewschwartzproductionreel@gmail.com (my name is spelled wrong) and created messages with my company and profile data. F THESE GUYS. I am now spamming them with anonymous messages.
Here’s how you can call bullshit:
– Names misspelled, grammar errors
– Rates that are too good to be true (PAs for $1500/day)
– Cut and pasted job descriptions that could be from Wikipedia
– Emails/texts at weird hours (3 am on Sunday)
– “Trial period” of a few weeks (no one does this)
– Requests for personal info

I just got this text last night, only it was from someone calling himself “Louis Rogers” saying he was from an actual company called Visuals by Clever Chimp, and that he found me on Mandy.com. The email that came today had a lot of the same text cited above. Unfortunately I emailed him my resume and pointed him to my website before I looked into whether this could be a scam. Now I’m worried he’s going to use my website to scam others, the same way he used Matthew Schwartz’s and the Clever Chimp people.

I had a gut reaction as well, after receiving two back to back emails from Alan Parker for a colorist job paying $1550.00. Sad thing is, I asked for info on him to back up who he is, and was sent his IMDB and other info. Based on that I sent my resume and references.
I decided to Google this before I signed anything, because it did not feel normal, now I know.

Well, that sucks. Here’s the text I just got, at 6:01 AM Chicago time, which would be 4:01 AM California time, with the exact same text, only using a different gmail address:
“Hi, I got your details from Mandy/flimandtvpro for the position of Screenwriter after some consideration, i will like you to work with me on a production. Kindly send your recent resume, availability and sample of your recent job(link) to my email (matthewaschwartzmediapro@gmail.com) and i will get back to you with the full job details. Your prompt response will be highly appreciated.”
The number he used was 510-313-5909, which is an Oakland phone.
The spelling and grammar errors were a red flag for me.

Isn’t it terrible…it’s hard enough to make a living in the arts, but to have a scum-sucking scammer try to take advantage of us as well. This is shameful.

Still getting emails / text messages from 614-922-8789. Haven’t alerted them that I know it’s a scam. Really crazy how far they’d go. Now, they’ve sent a 7 page script and asked to meet in person on October 1st.

Yes, I was contacted as a makeup artist, saying he needed a makeup artist. He said he found me on the Louisiana pro pages that we use here. I’m not new, I’ve done makeup for over 25 years and I could tell he was scamming by his language.

Hi, I am a freelance writer/producer in Atlanta.
I was hit with the “Johann Martinez” scam but it immediately seemed like BS. When “Johann” refused to give me his phone number I knew he was a phony. Fast forward to last week and people are contacting me about jobs I am supposedly offering. Fortunately my accounts have not been hacked. The scammers apparently scrape public data from the web and auto-generate the messages with fake email addresses. Regardless I sent complaints to LinkedIn, Mandy, etc.
DO NOT SEND ANY PERSONAL INFO to these people.
I have turned the tables and now I am spamming the fake email addresses with threatening messages using an anonymous email site. They will probably stop…I hope.
If you have received an offer from Castanet Creative Services (my company) then it is probably fake. Unless it isn’t, in which case, I look forward to working together.

I just got hit with this email, but with as a screenwriter. The funny thing is that they didn’t really adjust the thing, so it actually made it a terrible job offer of doing a week of work for a job interview and the chance of getting $850.
That said, I did think it was a legitimate, yet terrible, offer until I saw this post. Thanks for getting the word out.

Sensing a scam from the start, I played along with the guy claiming to be Matthew Schwartz from Atlanta. After the third e-mail, where he told me that he was sending a check to me and setting up a face to face meeting at a restaurant down the street from me, I wrote back “Great, looking forward to it, just send me a contract that I can have my lawyer look over” thinking that would end it but I just got a check. I’m not doing anything with it. Is there anything we can do other than mess around with him and waste his time?

I just got the scam, too, from “Matthew Schwartz.” He sent me a check for $3,000+ to be deposited but held for release tomorrow. BUT he asked me to send $500 tonight to secure some “equipment.” Yeah, right. I texted him all kinds of reasons why not. He texted “wow, never expected you to think so low of me …” Sad that predators like this try to take advantage of honest people trying to find work. He found me through Mandy.com. I will be cancelling my subscription with them. AND I will follow up with the FBI as well.

I did email my resume and cover letter and received an email back. before sending my application I decided to google the company Mei Ah and the sender Robert Chan once more. Glad I did because I found this post. The email is almost word for word. Such a shame that this world consist of people who prey on the hopes of other hard working individuals. From what I’ve heard from others, you cash the bad check and also that day they ask you make some purchase or place an order with that deposited money for something (“gear”) ranging from $300-$1000. They then cancel the check, leaving you on the hook for the $300-$1000 you spent on “gear”, which I’m sure is wired into them somehow.

Just received a check for $3,250.18 with a genuine bank and sender’s name. Twenty minutes later, I received a phone text from so-called, “GRANT BELL” saying he was notified by Fed-X that my check had been delivered and “please deposit as soon as possible.” I hope he’s holding his breath… he needs to be arrested for fraud.

My Production Beast profile had a PDF resume attached, and that PDF did contain my cell phone number as a contact. I am assuming this is how my cell number fell into this scammers hands. I have since removed the number from the PDF.
Just a heads up this is now affecting Production Beast and to be careful.

The scammers “spoof” their phone numbers — you can’t ID them that easily.
The scammers are typically operating outside US borders — FBI and CIA can’t slice off people to investigate such “small potatoes”.

These scams usually come in the way of a potential job offer and then the scammer asks you to send them money first. It’s quite ridiculous but they keep trying and are generally pretty easy to spot.
We do our best to catch these people before they can message anyone, and usually on the same day. In this case, he was able to fire off a couple of messages before we caught him.

I’m glad they’re savvy to this, but they need to elaborate… Matthew Schwartz is a legit professional, and it isn’t actually Matthew Schwartz doing this, it’s somebody impersonating him. (Also, the scammer doesn’t directly ask for money, they send money first in the form of a bad check and ask you to make a purchase with the bad funds.)

I was contacted by text by someone claiming to be Boris Cifuentes using the (510) 313-5909 number. When I emailed the email address provided, I got a similarly-worded email, except it the bio part was changed to that of Boris Cifuentes, and it listed $750 for a three-day week, nine hours per day, for a boom operator position.

I too was contacted by a person impersonating Gabriel Tyner via phone text message. It was regarding a film composer position in Kentucky. Sounded too good to be true and luckily I found this article in time. The email he used was gabrieltynermediapro1@gmail.com and the phone number was 510-313-5909. It hit all the points in the above post down to hours worked ect. They offered $1,100 a week for an 8 week shoot which would honestly would have been amazing if it were real. The biggest red flag was that they were going to mail me a check with an amount but I was to pay a merchant for a services out of the money I was getting which is text book check fraud dressed up in a fancy production scam. Not letting this destroy my film composing dreams just need to be more wary of those that would prey on them.

I had a rather lengthy correspondence with a Matthew Bates who stated he worked for Emblem Images. It was very similar to to the emails that have been listed for Production Assistants offer to pay me $1050 for 3 days of work in San Francisco and of course sending me $350 ahead of time in good faith, while paying for travel expenses. The next email stated he was sending an additional $1500 to put in my bank and then transfer via direct deposit to somebody else because they only dealt with cash.
I then stated in the email that I was confused and would love to talk with him on the phone and I ACTUALLY got him on the phone. After asking him several different questions trying to verify inconsistencies he finally got flustered and said if I wasn’t comfortable with it he would find someone else. The website he has is semi-professional and could fool the average joe.

I am writing a lengthy and detailed message to help future victims google this notice:
I received a text on October 5th 2017 from someone impersonating famous film director/producer Sir Alan Parker CBE (Director of Evita/Mississippi Burning/Angel Heart/Fame) from phone number 831-612-2986. He said he found my Director of Photography profile on Mandy.com (an employment website for entertainment professionals in the Film, TV, and Video industry). When I googled the 831 phone number, it came up clean … at first. When I googled Sir Alan Parker scam, I still came up with nothing … at first.
The imposter said in the text that he was hiring for what sounded like a low budget independent project and wanted to see my resume and references for a Director of Photography position. After I emailed my information, he replied that he was impressed. He also mentioned he was looking for proficiency in photo-chemical photography, landscape shots, night vision, etc. He continued to mention that my responsibilities would include managing the wardrobe department, hair/makeup department, and set design department. The email included an attachment of a 9 page screenplay written by Brandon Woods called “Darkness” (probably a fake or stolen script). The email address that was used was alanparker01filmsproduction@gmail.com. In his signature of all of his emails and texts, he included Sir Alan Parker’s full name, his imdb.com page link and personal webpage link with real demo reel and interviews. The email also included an incorrect linkedin.com page link and incorrect behance.net page link. All of the texts, emails and script were full of typos and poor grammar.
The imposter said he will work with me on this small project on a trial basis to prove myself. The shoot was expected to last about a week or so with future projects in the pipeline. I will be compensated at a weekly rate of $1855. I was suspicious when he said he will mail me a check upfront to include my services and the purchase of outdated HD Panasonic and Canon camera equipment (Panasonic AG-HPX2509 P2Camcorder 22x lens, Canon EOS 5D Mark III, Canon EOS Digital Rebel T2i) before our first meeting. Most film festival don’t accept any footage shot under 4K anyways. So, I emailed the imposter asking him for a call back for verbal confirmation so I can hear Alan’s British accent. The imposter said he was too busy and would have a personal assistant call me back. I heard from no one. He suspiciously had plenty of time to text and email me but no time for a quick hello for voice verification.
So when I thought about his 831 California phone number, I asked if he was shooting in London or California. He said he would fly in and shoot the production close to where I live in New York. On October 11th, he emailed and texted me that a $4,978 check was sent in the mail via USPS with a tracking number and that I had to deposit it as soon as possible which sounded very fishy. This text came from a different California number 805-994-0859. When I looked up and googled the new 805 phone number, scam guard’s website came up with similar employment scams involving mandy.com websites. When I googled Mandy.com check scams, even more scams came up particularly involving entertainment film professionals such as production assistants on youtube and this webpage. Thanks so much for the post. I told the imposter that I am aware of the scam, will not deposit the check, and have moved on to other legitimate work. If or when I get my fake check, I plan to put it in a plaque and hang it on my wall as a souvenir. Everyone beware.

They are still at it! I’m a makeup artist from Pittsburgh and just received a text from Boris Cifuentes. It seemed immediately fishy to me, but I emailed them back and continued to get red flags after the lengthy description about himself like it was cut and paste from a bio. The list of “duties” was almost insulting, like I didn’t know how to do my job and it also stated “trial period” which sounded like BS to me!!! Lol
I’m so glad I googled his name and scam and this website popped up! Thank you for posting! I reposted it to my Facebook to try and spread the word to other film industry professionals.

I just got a similar text last night, only it was from someone calling himself “Louis Rogers” saying he was from an actual company called Visuals by Clever Chimp, and that he found me on Mandy.com. The email that came today had a lot of the same text cited above. Unfortunately I emailed him my resume and pointed him to my website before I looked into whether this could be a scam. Now I’m worried he’s going to use my website to scam others, the same way he used Alan Parker and other legit people’s names.

I did so, and received a response that is almost verbatim what is described here. It seemed very fishy to me, I ran it by a friend who said it seemed weird to him as well, but to follow up and see what happens. I figured I’d do so until they asked for any truly damaging info, like a bank account # or social security #. Before responding to the email, though, I thought I’d do a little googling and I came upon this page. Thank you for posting this!

Glad I found this page!
I’m a Casting Director in Los Angeles. I was texted (via 432-614-3951) on Monday by “Alan Parker” claiming he got my info from Mandy.com. My first thought was “Alan Parker? The director of Evita, The Commitments, Midnight Express, and Fame? WTF is he doing on Mandy.com?” Then I figured it had to be another guy. There wasn’t any other one listed on imdb. But, like all of us in Hollywood, I at least responded to the email address he gave in the text (alanparkerproductioninc@gmail.com).
I kinda had a feeling it was a scam.
Today, I got a text from 832-529-4715 saying it was Alan Parker and that he had gotten my email and had emailed me back an offer. He requested that I check my email and respond ASAP.
As you can imagine, it was pretty much the same as everyone else had described. The money offer was not only odd, but pretty low. LOL.
I was going to reply that the offer was too low and then ask for 5x what I would normally charge to cast a film, just to see what happened. But then I realize that interacting with this guy on any level will probably open my up to email vulnerabilities I can’t even fathom.
What’s the point? Again, glad for this page, but I also wish there was a way to reverse this scam and nail the guy.

There’s a Matthew Schwartz scamming dance teachers now. If you get a booking for a wedding dance flashmob 6 2 hour lessons over 3 weeks tread very carefully. He’s contacted a number of dance teachers from different email accounts each time. Genius back story behind him. Posting this here as although unrelated when I searched Matthew Schwartz scam when a little suspicious this is where it brought me. Actually signs the emails similar to some of them above…

Very helpful. This just happened to me and reading this post got me on top of it. I’d like to add a name to the list. “Fahran Akhtar” claims to be from an Indian company. Wanted me to run errands for a trial period before actually hiring me. The company he claimed to be from was Excel Entertainment and the email he used was excelentertainment62@gmail.com.
It’s sad because the REAL Fahran is a respectable producer from Mumbai and deserves more than to be used like this.
Always live with a healthy dose of skepticism.
