Scam Alert: Emblem Images, Production Jobs

There are a LOT of industry scams preying on people hoping for a career in film and television. They’ve been going around for years, but they’ve been particularly prevalent in 2017, 2018, and 2019.

The worst part? The scammers use the names of REAL industry professionals. Remember, the people listed here aren’t the actual scammers– they are victims, too.

**Current imposter name list as of May 2019:

  • Johann Martinez
  • Matthew Schwartz
  • Clement Cheung (Mei Ah Entertainment)
  • Chris Galipo
  • Gabriel Tyner
  • Matthew Bates (Emblem Entertainment)
  • Grant Bell
  • Brandon Taylor
  • Alan Parker
  • Graham Rich (Rich Tint Production/Film/Director)
  • Louis Rogers (Visuals by Clever Chim)
  • Boris Cifuentes
  • Brad Cruz
  • Michael LeBlanc
  • Beatrice Mercy
  • Rebel Production Studios
  • Rufus Cannon
  • Ryan Chandler
  • Robert Alexander
  • Gung-Ho Film Productions
  • Jean-Luc B. from Mar Vivo Films
  • Steve Gonzalez from Eyes and Ears Productions
  • Chikki Media Productions
  • Donald Chan at CREATV Company
  • Jean-Alexandre Luciani of Eastness Productions
  • Moviola
  • Emblem Images
  • Richard Chan – Hurrah

How does the scam work?

These guys find the information of real professionals from real job sites, film crew databases, and local state and city film directories. It begins with an innocuous text message or e-mail, “Hi, I found your information on Mandy.com/Workbook/ *Film Crew Directory Here* and think you’d be a great fit, please send me your resume”. They’ll offer you a strange rate and maybe give a few other bizarre details.

You e-mail your resume, and then you get a length reply (see below). It can be for any number of positions beyond production assistant — there’s been reports of the scam offering a position as an editor, boom operator, makeup artist, screenwriter, or camera op.

How the scam actually works: After applying (the application requires you submit your mailing address), you will receive a check within 2-3 business days for around $3,000. The scammer will ask that you deposit this check in your bank account and use the money to make some sort of dubious $500-$1000 purchase. What actually happens? The scammer voids the check, and you’re on the hook for the $500-$1000 purchase.

How to tell it’s a scam: Grammatical and spelling errors. There’s also an over explanation of expectations and job descriptions. After personally being a freelance hire for ten years, in my past experience, all details are discussed in person or over the phone. With these scams, though, there’s a lack of any sort of personal connection that is very unusual. Any real industry professional is going to want to talk to you on the phone to ensure you’re competent. **UPDATE: As of September 2017, some particularly bold scammers will actually call you on the phone. **UPDATE: As of April 2019, their grammar has gotten much better and they’re much more succinct. See bullet points below.

If you think you’ve been the victim of a production scam, alert your bank immediately.

How the scammer finds victims

The scam started on Craigslist, but unfortunately, the scammers also now prowl job boards and sites where freelancers find work. Examples may include Mandy.com, ziprecruiter.com, film industry crew lists (including on state and local film commission websites), or productionbeast.com.

(In my ten years in this career, I am yet to receive a job offer through any of those sites — it’s almost always through word of mouthAs a producer who hires crew, I never hire anyone through any of those sites. It’s usually through word of mouth or FB hiring groups.)

Remember:

  • Scammers will pose as a real company or production person, and will direct you to a legit website. Their e-mail address never has the same domain as the legit web address for the company they are impersonating; a letter may be omitted or added.
  • If a company offers direct deposit, you will receive a form in person on your start date; it will never be requested in advance via email.
  • NEVER accept advance checks from companies you’ve applied to onlineIf they want you to pay for anything in advance, ask them to call ahead and put it on their credit card.
  • If something seems off, it probably is.

The Scam as of April 2019:

There is a savvier version of this same scam floating around. Some folks might still be sending out the very wordy emails (see below), but some have picked up on brevity:

“Emblem Images would like you to join our team as a production assistant for a Ben Sherman photo shoot in San Francisco, CA as you came highly recommended by a production website linked with indeed.com.

The shoot date is September 22nd to 24th, your flight will be scheduled to leave by 11:30am on September 22nd as you’re required to work from September 22nd to 24th. Work hours are between 6pm to 1am and pay is $350 daily, so a check for $1050 will be issued at the end of the production, you’ll also receive $350 as per diem to cater for your meals throughout the shoot and this check will be issued early next week.

Send a reply if you’re available and interested in the shoot, thanks.”

This is much sleeker, but it doesn’t fall in line with the bullet points above.

    • I just got scammed from “Jean-Luc B.” from Mar Vivo Films… while MarVivo films is a legit company – this guy was NOT. Same email for DP, same money, when I told him that I CASHED the check instead of deposit, I haven’t heard back.

  2. Oh and they even went so far as to email me a script!

    Post a Reply
    • YES! I got the script too! called “Pained” about vampires… which was NOTHING like the website of the production company… travel shows etc. Man, that was close!

  3. FYI. These guys will actually call you. Especially when you tell them sure I’ll depaoit but my bank will put a 5 day hold on the check. They then wanna isit you deposit it in the atm. And then I finally said, well I’ll take it to a check cashing place! Hahaha.

  4. I got this last week from Robert Alexander. Except this guy texted me his email address first, then replied with the Copypasta from above

    • Also got an email from Robert Alexander, from Argos Comunicación. Replied back asking about hrs. Responded saying he’ll get back with me and proceeded to email script with scheduled events of when I should be receiving check, to email copy of deposit receipt, and to confirm with him about a time for an interview for the position the following week. Who sends a check for 6.5k before a ‘job Interview’ without at least a phone call?… not legit

      Other Red flags:
Received other offers from random “Prod Companies” via text asking for resume via email.
Referenced company is legit, but email is usually @gmail.com
Email is almost word-for-word from script above
Googled name; not listed with Company at all.
      Incorrect grammar

  5. Today I got an email from Sir Alan Parker.

It all started from a text msg like many others said with his email asking for a resume and maybe links to some reel… for an editor position. He mentioned that he found me via Mandy.com

I thought it was weird with the txt msg… but I replied anyway via email.

Then today, I received a reply. A long email similar to above asking if I’m willing to do a trial period $1500/week with 3 days/week

He said he’ll be sending me the check after I agreed and sent him the address & phone#.

I haven’t replied back but I did some google search and found Alan Parker haven’t made a movie since 2003 and last year he even said he will not make any more film. So I thought it was weird that he’s making a film now…

Then I searched further and found this page… turns out it’s a SCAM.

    I’m glad I didn’t reply.

    Thanks.

  7. I got one around this time last year by a british woman who actually calls you and talks to you. She does her research and knows the films and shows you have worked on and the mutual connections of the person she is posing to be. Crazy!
I just received another today via email from Ryan Chandler who said he saw my reel and resume on a site, and claims to be with Thomas Films. And they are doing a commercial for Fox TV called “Sparkles”, blah blah blah…massive description of what I would be required to do…Im an actor, its pretty straight forward…then a lengthy description of who the production company is, the job requirements I would be inclined to do, benefits, $1500/day, hotel/accomodations, etc etc…..this was to take place in Washington DC the weekend of May 18, 2018. So beware..

    • Just got the same email from Ryan Chandler.. verbatim…how do we report this shit and get them caught?

  8. I recently got last week, and like you all it started with a text message and escalated from there. Luckily I did some research and found this site before I did anything stupid. What really triggered me was the fake script that they sent, it was quite blurry and hard to read. Plus they never answered my calls always claimed they were in a meeting. I’m working now to see what actions can be taken against them. Stay tuned…

  11. I got two emails and a phone call from someone claiming to be Michael McDermott with gung-ho films with email address gunghofilmsproduction231@gmail.com at 530-948-8193. The real Mr. McDermott has a different phone number and email address on their website. And the guy had a nigerian accent. Very scammy.

  12. I may have a new name to add to your list. Yiwen Chen of South Sky Filmworks. I got a text from someone of that name, from “Southskyfilms” (all one word was their doing). I guess I’m naturally paranoid because my first instinct was to google the company, and though it’s not mentioned on this page, this page did come up in the search. South Sky Films is a real company in Taiwan, but note the slight difference in company names. Also the e-mail on the text is not the same as on the company’s contact page.

    Post a Reply
    • Also received the same text from Yiwen Chen at “SouthSkyFilms.” Thanks to seeing this I didn’t respond.

    • I was contacted by one Daniel Chen of South Sky Filmworks in March, 2019,offering work in April 2019, with the same overwrought description of my responsibilities as a production supervisor. He sent me a script for the John Carpenter student project “Dark Star”, but failed at several crucial junctures to be accurate about the nature of production. He provided me with an address of a Bed & Breakfast which was local but did not have the capability of housing his crew, was not clear about basic production aspects, and misrepresented a studio where they “would” be filming. The check that he sent me was hacked from a third party who was unaware and her signature was forged. I reported all of this to the Boston Police, who found two complaints about Daniel and his cell phone number. Scammer.

    • One more from Daniel Chen. 4/28/2019. Red flags all over the text.

BTW, I am an editor and I need work badly.

    • One more from Daniel Chen,a “Cast Director and also Recruitment Personnel for Southsky filmworkx Production, an independent film production company based in Taiwan and presently in the USA…” 5/13/2019. Red flags all over the unnecessarily long text (even for me, as an ESL) and the first one being not mentioning my name at the beginning as Dear Ana or Hello, Ana.

    • Again, if you can get a cell phone number on Daniel Chen, let me know. I have a detective form the Boston Police on the case.

  13. Also add dstephen@hasbrostudio.com or emails coming from the domain hasbrostudio.com to this list. Hasbro Studios is, of course, a legit studio based out of Burbank. These scammers used the name Stephen Davis (who is actually the EVP & Chief Content Officer there) to send out PA gigs – because I’m sure that’s exactly what his big salary pays him to do, send out PA gigs. I was sent an email about a gig in North Carolina (although I applied from the Philly Film Commission website). Details were given about the production location (Ritz Carlton, Charlotte). I called the hotel and spoke to the Communications Manager to confirm the commercial shoot – of course there was no shoot taking place. Same jazz about sending payment in the form of a check in advance…I called the Philly Film Commission to see how thoroughly they vet the jobs they post and forwarded the email correspondence to them. They took the job posting down the next day.

  16. After Michael from Gung-Ho films, I received the exact same text from a Patrick Carr at mandarinfilm101@gmail.com. Obviously the real company has a different contact info, and they’re based in china. The phone number is always from California (where I’m not!).
I keep blocking them, but they’re annoying.

  18. Seems that for “Jean-Luc” it has been a busy week! My text came from (570) 241-0262 on the 25th. Interestingly, Mandy doesn’t have my telephone contact so they obviously went to my website. Mar Vivo Films was the gMail address.

Thanks for putting this stream out there. Gladly only wasted an hour or so researching this. Sorry to those who have lost more!!!

  20. I got one a year ago from ‘Andrew Bell’, and another with almost the exact same text now from ‘Jonathan L’ claiming to be from chinafilminsider.com. One for Set Decorator and one for Production Design role.

  21. I just got my third text like this in 1 month and knew some sort of fraud bullshit was up. I’m a motion graphic designer, and never has someone wanted to hire me before I even applied to something. Also, If they found your resume on Mandy.com and want to work with you, why would they need you to email them your resume that they already have??? That doesn’t even make sense. Googled it and found this site.

Add Cheng Wei-hao from “Greener Grass Productions” to the list.

    These scammers are idiots.

  23. Another hit from FRANCIS DALE in November 2018. Same as above poster. They usually take several days to respond to even basic emails I send them, so they sent a check long after I had already given up on the “job offer”.

    BEWARE!

    • Francis Dale just contacted me. It appears as if he’s still scamming people. These are a common 419 job scam. In which a fake job recruiter gets a hold of your resume or info usually via a job posting board. Then will hire you as their “production assistant” or “booking assistant”. The point of the scam is to send you money with a fake check and ask you to run “errands” for them such as booking equipment and so on. When the check bounces the money you sent to the client will be taken out with the money that bounced being put on you to pay back to your bank.

Chikki Media Productions is another scam artist doing this.

    • Hello,

That was the guy who emailed me, but I saw he has a linkedin profile and so does the company he works at. This has all happened within the last 24 hours and I haven’t sent him any on my info.

  32. Feck Jean-Alexandre Luciani!!!

I have received a check from this guy. I have not cashed it because it was to go to be true in the beginning but played along.

So, now I have the bogus check, and man is it bogus!!! lol!!!!

It was sent overnight from Colorado and its from an escrow company in Florida, like, are you even trying?!?! I politely asked him about it and expressed my concerns.

His reply, The escrow company is sponsoring the film and the guy in Colorado is the payroll officer. HAHA Jean nice try!

I went as far as investigating the check in more detail and found that the routing number belongs to a bank in Alabama and the Bank ID number goes to a bank in Jacksonville Florida. Also the routing number and the check number are backwards in regards of placement at the bottom of the check.

It’s completely sad that people are doing this and makes my heart hurt.

Sorry to those that may be in contact with others like this and I’m forever grateful to have stumbled on this site.

  33. Jean-Alexandre Luciani of Eastness Productions is a scam artist. Beware of eastness Productions. They send you a fake check to make you deposit it. Then ask you to withdraw money out of your account. After you give them some of the money you just deposited to send back to them for something. After you take the money out of your account you find out the larger check they gave you was fake. Therefore, they gave you no money. But you gave them real money out of your real bank account. That’s how the scam works.

  35. I just got one today from Donald Chan at CREATV Company who produces The Bachelor.
I forwarded it to the real company asking if he was legit and they said NO!
I’m Wardrobe/Costume builder FX assistant etc.

Best part is that our idiot head of the State Film board posted it as legit on the board’s FB page without a clue.

Got one from Steve Gonzalez from Eyes and Ears Productions. They found me on Mandy where I’m listed as a composer. I sniffed it out after they said they’d send a check up front so I could make purchases. I’m a composer for Chrissakes, what am I going to purchase? I’m embarrassed that I passed along two references, but told them about the scam when I sussed it out. Too bad it wasn’t the real thing. I checked out Steve’s reel and boy could I help sweeten that up!

    • Again, a second response, but if anyone can get a cell number for David Chen or Richard Chan-if working for SouthSky Filmworx, let me know as I have an active police investigation in place.

    • I received a very similar letter from “Donald Chen” last week. Is there any way to scam the scammers and cash the check anyway?

    • Again, if anyone can grab a cell phone number for Daniel Chen, please share it. I have an active police investigation going in Boston

  39. Someone going by the name of Richard Chan is also part of this scam
    Please ignore them
No one by that name has worked with us – ever!
Hurrah Productions is a reputable and REAL company – Richard Chan (or pretending to be this person) is a scam artist!

  40. Thank you for this scamming info (and thank you to James Rotheram for posting). Because of your scam alert, I was able to figure out that this email I received today is a scam:

Hey hi, my name is Richard Chan, Cast Director and Recruitment officer at Hurrah Productions,a Film Production Company based out of Singapore. We are putting together a crew for a short-film project here in the States for the 3rd-7th of June. I had to check out a few directories before i came across your contact via the Work Book Directory and I would also like to confirm your availability & schedule for this project.

I would also like you to know this is a paid JOB of less than a week and the project wouldn’t affect the Status of your present job if engaged with any.

You will have the opportunity to work with us on other upcoming projects, based off your performance on the short-film if you would love to. We also have a lined up series of up and coming short-film projects for the rest of the year and will also be needing crews.

If you are interested and will be available on these dates, do respond with an updated resume and I’ll get back to you with more details as regard the project. I would also like to have your resume kept for future reference. Thanks so much.

    • Hi received same email as Jeanette. I thought it was legit as I Googled Hurrah and it looked legit, Said they found me on Workbook. I do get work from all over so while I was cautious I did consider it . I’m a still photographer so this hasn’t really been circulated in my circles. I Googled Hurrah film production scam and found this post. Thank you Needle Girl!

    • Just received this same email from Richard Chen of Hurrah.
Language seemed a little off and came across this thread with the same email I received.
James, thanks for confirming this is a scam.

I gave my phone number and availability for a call but nothing else because something still felt off. He actually attached a script and when I opened it, it was for a feature length film which seemed more fishy to me. Did some digging and found it downloadable for free online. Did even more digging and ultimately wound up here. If I receive any calls or texts I will follow up. Thanks for all your posts, this is messed up!

  45. 6/3/2019 Nicole Smith from Thomas Films texted saying she found me on Yelp! The thing is, now they are targeting licensed massage therapists for $1500/day for a 3-day job in DC for SPARKLES production. I reported to FTC as well as the two main USA professional massage associations. Thank you for documenting this scam.

    • Via Yelp I got the exact same one from Nicole Smith- supposedly from, I should say. Used the same details–SPARKLE for Fox TV in D.C. June 21-23. Will send me check beforehand for $2850 to cover flights, etc. I’ll then use to pay their “travel agent.”
I’ll go ahead to get check, address, etc. so I can report it all to FTC, also alerting AMTA & ABMP.
