There is a hiring scam in the film industry aimed at production assistants. Their ideal target? Someone who is new and eager to the business, with little experience how the hiring process works.
This isn’t a new scam — it’s been going around for at least six months. The Anonymous Production Assistant mentioned it a few months ago, but the scammers haven’t stopped. It breaks my heart because their target is the kind of person who reads this blog: a hard worker with nothing but a dream and the desire to just get their one chance. And it’s disgusting.
One variation of the e-mail reads:
Company profile: Good Clean Fun’s state-of-the-art production facilities are where the magic happens. Our seasoned professionals oversee each and every part of the process. From creative development, to production and post, it all happens under one roof. Every project is driven by our vision and branded with our unique point of view.
Responsibilities include the following:
Good Clean Fun LLC, will be producing a TV commercial to promote our new show *Barely Famous* and your assistance will be needed. Below are the job duties:
Operate Studio Camera, Audio, Graphics generator or teleprompter
Organize studio sets, cameras and monitoring
Maintain studio and lighting
Use microphones, IFB receivers, and audio facilities
Setup and review graphic elements
Perform other job-related duties as assigned
Note: The production will be done in San Francisco between 10-21-2015 to 10-24-2015 in Blast Digital Studio, Toland Place, San Francisco, CA but you’ll be needed here in San Francisco from 10-19-2015. Both travel/hotel expenses will be covered by the company.
Instruction: Please respond with your contact information such as your full name, address and cell number where a check will be mailed out to, it is for your traveling and lodging expenses (more information will be provided as we progress). You will also be provided an itinerary by the designated travel agent arrangement.
How to Tell This is a Scam
Very rarely is anyone hired so quickly and impersonally with zero mention of who referred you.
When you’re at the entry level of any industry, there’s a lot of people vying for jobs because the barrier to entry isn’t very high. You’re usually hired based on (1) experience, (2) word of mouth, (3) your own persistence, or (4) applying to a job on Staff Me Up. Typically, when you get offered a job, they production coordinator or producer will make mention of how they found you.
If you get approached for a job through email, it’ll read something like this:
Hey M, so-and-so recommended you for a PA position. Can you shoot me your resume?
Thanks,
PC
Production Coordinator
No production assistant on any REAL project is expected to handle all of the responsibilities.
Unless it’s a student film or some unscrupulous producer with zero concern for doing the project properly and is stealing all the cash anyway, no one hires PAs with the expectation that they will run cameras, lighting, and sound. Those are positions filled by highly skilled and experienced people. Those are the jobs you’re aiming for when you begin as a production assistant, but you don’t start out by touching the most expensive equipment on one of your first days.
Normal PA duties are: going on runs, assisting the production coordinator or assistant director, handling extras, getting releases signed, etc. It doesn’t sound as glamorous, but these are very important tasks that no movie or television show could be made without.
“But it seems to be a real production company with a legit website?”
This is the worst and most clever part of the scam. The scammer will impersonate a real production company — Good Clean Fun, LLC was the alleged company in the example. (And yes, they are a real company.) The scammer will then purchase a domain name very similar to the real production company domain, maybe missing one letter so you will hopefully not notice — and send out the email. As is the case in the example, the domain was something like “@goodcleanfunlc.com” — while the REAL production company’s web address is actually goodcleanfunllc.com. Did you realize there’s one L missing?
The money is too good to be true.
In variations of the scam, the proposed rate is something obscene — $400 or $500 per day, plus travel expenses. Once you reach a certain level, then yes, you can make that kind of money — but let’s be real, this is not a realistic rate for a production assistant gig. The average rate for a PA ranges from $150-$250.
In most cities, production companies RARELY pay for out of town PAs.
In the example, it says the production is going to take place in San Francisco. There are dozens of qualified production assistants already living in San Francisco. Why on earth would a production pay to fly someone in and put them up, especially someone with little experience?
There’s an exception, though: Occasionally, productions from Los Angeles/New York will think the local crew couldn’t possibly have the chops and they’ll fly in everyone, including their PAs. But even then, someone on the crew will have known/recommended the PA in advance.
If you’ve never worked on a film set before, it’s highly unlikely someone would pay for your travel.
In other variations of the scam, there’s a lot more travel involved–probably to make the shoot sound more alluring and exotic.
The cost to travel a crew member isn’t cheap. It usually includes airfare, car rental, hotel, and per diem– the total is often thousands of dollars depending on the length of the shoot. For this reason, only the essential crew members are paid to travel. Everyone else is hired locally.
Sometimes, a production will travel their PA, but only if the PA has been with them for quite a while and is very experienced.
We all want to be successful and land an amazing gig right out of the gate that pays us more than we’re worth and flies us all around the world, and of course, anything is possible — but if any of these other factors I’ve described are true, then unfortunately, you are probably being scammed.
You’re NEVER given money in advance.
I’ve traveled for different shoots for five years now, for multiple production companies and networks. Never was I fronted any money to arrange my travel through a travel agent, it’s all handled by the production. At most, they’ll ask for my full name and date of birth, as that’s required when purchasing airline tickets.
This is how it works: The production coordinator or travel coordinator books ALL flights and hotels for crew. You’ll then receive an e-mail with your itinerary, flight details, and transportation information. You’ll either be given per diem on the ground as cash, OR you invoice for it after the fact. Most importantly and unlike this scam says, you’ll never be told how much your flight or hotel cost, but sometimes you can get reward points if you have an account.
Also, for the most crew and production positions, you don’t get paid in advance for work you haven’t done. There are too many variables in a freelance world to do otherwise: People get sick, cars break down, shoots get postponed or cancelled, etc. You get paid after the shoot, always.
How This Scam Works
It seems these scammers find their victims through various job boards. I’d also be wary of Craigslist postings.
How the scam actually works is tricky, but I know these companies will send fraudulent checks for you to cash to “pay for your travel”. When that check doesn’t clear, that’s where the scam comes into play and I’m not entirely sure what happens — if they ask that you cover the expense, if they steal your bank info, or what — but basically, the gig never materializes and you’re out the cash they were supposedly fronting you.
What to Do if This Happens to You
Alert the real production company that they’re being impersonated so they can take legal action. If you are listed on job boards, alert the job board of the scam. Leave a comment here or at our Facebook group with the details — it could help others figure out if they’re a target.
If you know anyone else trying to get into the film industry, share this post with them. The only way to beat these unscrupulous asses is to educate and prevent future victims — eventually they’ll stop this fiasco.
Variations of the Scam
As of January 2017, these types of scams are still going strong, albeit with a different twist. If you’ve been targeted, forward it on and I’ll add it to the list:

- Work-From-Home Production Runner Scam
- Johann Martinez-Imposter Production Assistant and Editor Scam

So this just happened. I got that similar email. The reply email asked for so much personal info back I knew it wasn’t right. When I get hired on a regular legit gig they barely ask for my last name lol… and maybe s headshot! Every legit production job I’ve had , they would always speak to me over the phone first so I knew something was up . First thing I checked her name IMDB and there was nothing so I definitely knew something wasn’t right. So then I googled her email and here’s your article! Bam! Thank you so much for writing this I really appreciate it… I would love to forward you her email she sent me because it is kind of different so it must be he newest one lol! This gig I get to work from home because she is always traveling away with her children and her filming .. blah blah blechhhh!!!
January 5, 2017
Joy, I’m sorry you were targeted but relieved this post helped you!
And, please, forward her email on to me if you would (laryssa at needlegirlhaystackworld.com)– I’m starting to posting examples of each scam to help people out who are suspicious, like you were!
Do you know how she got your information?

Seemed legit so i did asking more info about the project. He was looking for a makeup artist. This is that johann martinez by the way. He emailed me back and thats when i got the message about trials and paying crazy amounts. I looked at his so called site and it looked bad quality and i was like no way this can be legit. Then i looked closer and all his stuff is porn! Im like oh no so i googled him and came across this. Knew something was up. Glad i didnt get caught further. Mad he has my resume now. Ugh. This is lowest of the low seriously thought it was weird he didnt want an interview. I emailed him a bunch of questions before i found out it was a scam cuz it seemed fishy. Bet he wont respond cuz he was caught.

Addendum: I received an email alerting me a check has been issued and I am to deposit ASAP.I have a cashier’s check drawn on BancFirst for $2855 w/Nathaniel Youngblood as the Two illegible signatures dated 14th in a priority mail envelope with a tracking number attached. I haven’t signed anything so this is “money in advance.”
June 18, 2017
Yikes, that is super sketchy, especially since they haven’t even talked to you on the phone!!
It’s a bad check for sure, but how are they profiting from this?

Thank you so much for posting this. I am a freelance voice over artist and I was just “contacted” by Alan Parker. Almost word for word to your posts. Saved me a ton of heartache
October 2, 2018
I believe I was involved with such a scam. I replied to a job post on Craigslist for PA position and was emailed back, asked to sign a contract for the four days of shooting, told I’d get mailed a retainer fee payment of $500 up front and would get the rest of my pay when production was completed. I was also told that I’d get a second check to pay for rental fee of production gear I was to pick up and drop off, my main job tasks. I started to get suspicious. I haven’t heard back since emailing them saying so. I have info about alleged media production company including link to their website.
October 6, 2018
I just got a text yesterday from ProductionBeast about interest in hiring me as a DP. I haven’t used Production Beast in ages and my credits there are not at all impressive since they’re several years old. They asked for a resume which I provided and then I received the incredible sketchy e-mail asking for my personal info and that they wanted to pay me up front, etc. Red flags popped up immediately and upon one search I found this page. Thank you very much for making this page. It truly is sad that someone would take advantage of hopeful people that would like a chance to get good payed work. The e-mail I received was grammatically all over the place and WAY too good to be true. I’ll forward it to needlegirlhaystackworld.com so that you can add it to this list. I would hate to see anyone else get taken by this scam.
July 22, 2019
Yeah. The latest one is “Hurrah Productions” offering DP jobs under the same scammy shit. Parasites.
October 16, 2019

I got this exact same email today too. I naively replied with my contact info but it seems like the real “scam” happens when I try to cash any checks they may send me. Thanks for posting Laryssa!
February 20, 2018
I got an email from Kenny Chan, of XC Productions. On google this is apparently a vietnamese producer, he also had a website and a full vimeo page.
I was concerned someone wanted to send me cash to my account for my pay as well as for the production- and I told them in two emails that I wasnt comfortable putting the entire amount into my account because of the tax I would potentially be liable to pay. They literally IGNORED my questions- and then sent me an email saying they had sent the cheque- and I hadn’t even agreed to the role- though they had my mailing address.
They also sent a script- which was garbage- and on the script at the bottom it said ‘property of johann martinez productions’
Found your post when I googled that- this is such crap! Thanks for the heads up-

Can’t believe people like this prey on freelancers trying to pay their flipping bills. Just remember, no production company will ask you to work for free and pay for things while “promising” reimbursement through a payroll officer. Stay safe y’all!

Geez. Thanks for sharing. What in the world is an “Assistance Producer”?
June 4, 2017
This just happened to me from the same person. I sent my resume over since he already had my number and email address from Production Beast where he found me. Do I need to be worried about giving my credits? I’m so nervous right now.
June 8, 2017
This Johann guy just sent me a similar e-mail and I knew something was off so I googled him and see this! Thank God I trusted my intuition because 2 friends said I was “overreacting” and should send my info.

Wow… that’s wretched… I was recently sent a text by Allu Aravind from Geetha Arts (which is a real film company in India — they’ve done some blockbusters out there — and Allu Aravind is the owner of the company)… He had found my profile on StaffMeUp, and thought I would be great to work on a short film they’re doing in my area (Miami)… I thought it was a little strange that the owner of this prestigious film company would hit me up, but I didn’t want to take the chance and miss an opportunity. I sent him my resumes and availability to his email (the thing is that I noticed the email didn’t match the website’s contact page’s email listing, nor the email on wikipedia.. I thought to give it a shot anyway since certain projects create extra email addresses for certain departments.. Then I got this email today:

Look familiar? It looked fishy to me… The first warning sign was in the About Me section — Allu doesn’t claim to be the owner of Geetha Arts… Huh!?!?! Then as I continued reading, all the other warning signs you listed were the very ones I noticed… Especially, the last bit… Why in the hell do I need to send information that is already provided in my resume? That just made no sense… I did some googling, and found this post, and this very comment… Oh… and here’s the email address I was given to contact: geethaartproductioncompany@gmail.com — BE ON THE LOOKOUT, GUYS!!! Thanks for posting

I received this very same message. They sent me a check for for $2600, told me to deposit it, withdraw $2100 in cash and to deposit it into a Bank of America account so that the travel agent can use the funds to set up travel arrangements. The other $500 is to be used as my per diem. I asked why didn’t they just send the money to the travel agent directly and their response went something to the tune of, “you’ll be handling travel arrangements for execs on the next project and we want you to learn the ropes.” Whenever I hear cash this check, and give us the difference I immediately think Nigerian Scam. I’ll just retain the funds until this weekend and see what happens. I’m not about to just deposit cash into an account.

This appears to be a scam looking for producers do not respond or send any information

I just got this scam from a text message from a 510 number for a grip position. the email address I was given to reply was johannmartinezproductioninc@gmail.com.
I had just sent him my resume when I decided to look him up. The real Johann Martinez is a video editor. I’ll update this post when I get a response from my email.
June 11, 2017
P.S. He said he got my contact information from Mandy.com.
June 24, 2017
EXACT same thing just happened to me.
Same email : johannmartinezproductioninc@gmail.com
Text from 510 254 2028
Said they got my info and resume from
filmneworleans.org
Was looking for Costume Designers
June 13, 2017
I responded to the text and sent them an email before realizing this was a scam. Now I get 10 to 20 spam text messages every day from rotating phone numbers. I can’t block them because the phone number changes and my iphone can’t block a text based on random content patterns. I don’t know how to get them to stop because it happens at 3 to 4 am and I need my phone because it’s my alarm. I am very frustrated because today I have two interviews but was woken up so much last night.
Do NOT fall for this scam. Sad that it preys on people looking for work.

Just got one as well. Someone claiming they needed a PA and then listing off a huge list of tasks that would be required, many of which are skilled positions you would not be asking a PA to attempt.

Decided to post here to add to the good work people are doing here making people aware of this scam artist. The phone number he texted me from is 510-254-2028.

I was recently contacted by a Stephenie Kayoko claiming to be from Chikki Media Productions based out of Tokyo. She found my resume on Ziprecruiter.
I contacted the owner of Chikki Media who informed that multiple people have been contacted by this person through Ziprecruiter.
January 15, 2019
Hey Jake,
I just got the same thing you did from Stephenie Kayoko. She said she got my resume from Indeed. I didn’t think anything of it. I emailed her back my skill set. She replied how I would be paid for a trial basis working with vendors on January 16-18th. She gave me a form to fill out. Now, I did give her my address info, but not banking or social security. I repeatedly emailed her when and where I was supposed to go. Plus, I was interested in talking to vendors. I told her that I worked as an Video Editor, Videographer, and PA. She just kept giving me the run around. I received an email today saying that a check was on its way for $3550. I knew something was up because I’m thinking, “Who would mail out a check for $3550 when you never starting working yet?” I tried calling the number she texted me. Nothing. I then googled her name, and this article popped up. I knew this was shady.
So my question to you is what did you do about it? I didn’t give her anything in regards to money.
Thanks,
Frankie
January 16, 2019
Hi Jake and Frankie,
This exact same thing just happened to me. Unfortunately I didn’t catch on that it was a scam right away. I actually received the check, deposited it and sent a money order out. It was not any of my money, but from the check that they sent. Immediately afterwards, “Stephenie” started to get very sketchy in the text messages and I looked her up and found this thread. I blocked her and now am wondering what exactly to do next. The only information that she has is my name, email, and address. I never passed along any banking info, but I’m still concerned.

I think I actually got scammed. I received the check and sent it out, but couldnt do so, so I used some of my own money. Unfortunately I am dumb enough to get scammed.

That’s a well known scam!!! TRASH THE EMAIL — DO NOT REPLY — DO NOT ACCEPT ADVANCED PAYMENTS OF ANY KIND!!! The will send you check(s) for you to cash and they ask you to “rent” equipment” from one of their scammers and then send back $ and/or they will ask you to deduct wages then send back the difference. The check(s) you will get are BOGUS! Your bank will cash then and then when the fraud is discovered, you will be out of your hard earned cash!
Hope this helps you…

Hi folks happy to find this thread. I just received the fraud email from “Stephenie Kayoko” which I guess is the fraud name they came up with from the actual Stephanie Kyoto who does work for production companies.
Anyway the message I got is exactly the same as the one posted by Rogers on the 29th of Jan.
Just adding my experience so this is an easy find when googled.
I didn’t send anything other than my resume, which does not have my mailing address.
So far no response.
October 14, 2018
Hi Larissa,
Being a fresh-out of-college student, I was on a hunt for any type of entry-level production assistant gigs around my area and found this post on Craigslist. The ad dropped the name Harper Media Production asked for anyone interested to reply to the Craigslist email with a resume. I responded to the ad with a resume after viewing what I assumed was their website (I actually reviewed the legit company’s website) and was contacted two days later. It was from a “Chris Zaleski” (chriszale@harpermediaproduction.com).
“Chris” then proceeded to give me the details of the job duties:
“Hello Mary,
Thanks for your response. We are looking for a production assistant for an upcoming production. This will be still photography for a commercial campaign. We have reviewed your submission details and we’ll be happy to have you on board for the upcoming production. Your main focus will be gear management, help with gear pick up/drop off. You will also be responsible for attending to the needs of the crew, collecting/organizing paperwork and any other task as assigned. This is a contract role to start, but has the potential to become a staff position.
Production Details:
Project type: Commercial
Location: Manhattan Beach Pier, CA
Date: October 18th – 21st 2018
Compensation: $1,200
Kindly get back to me if you have availability for the required dates and can perform all the required task so i can send you further details along with the crew contract agreement in a follow up email.”
“Chris” continued to tell me that the client I would be working with was going to send me a check which is allocated for a retainer’s fee for me and the rest would be utilized for equipment rental that I would have to go tend to once I have received the check.
I received the check and deposited it as soon as I received it. “Chris” told me to keep him updated and so I did. He told me to let him know as soon as the check was processed. Fortunately, BofA immediately caught the illegitimacy of the check and notified me; I let “Chris” know and he continued to tell him to notify him as soon as the check clears. I monitored the progress of the funds and noticed that the check bounced.
I went in to BofA and they told me that the check I deposited bounced and that it could be due to an attempted scam. The BofA associate told me that sometimes banks will immediately allow for the withdrawal of the check even before the check clears. This is how the scammer gets the money through the person who owns the account. This completely fcks over the person who has the direct relationship to the bank because once the bank realizes that the check has bounced then their only contact is the person who owns the account.
Unfortunately, I didn’t see the warning sighs right away and wasted time corresponding to this scammer.
I looked up Chris Zaleski on LinkedIn and had no luck. In one of our emails he also had another email link to their supposed website…(this one mimicked the legit website I first researched). I thought it was odd there was no phone number attached.
I really don’t know what to do next, but I feel completely defeated.
June 7, 2019
First off, thanks Larissa for this page because the moment I felt iffy I started looking up PA scams and this page popped up! Mara, I am so sorry this happened to you! I just recieved the same email from a guy named Steven Birch with Integrity Film Productions. This was also in response to a Craigslist posting. I knew something wasn’t right when he told me that I had to “send” a payment to the gear company. Unfortunately, I have been scammed before but that experience helped me catch the signs before it was too late in this situation. This was the email….

Hi Larissa,
More often Craigslist’s job and gig postings are just a scam. These scam posts appear like a disease to swindle, cheat, deceive anyone answering a job or a gig posting. Here are a few of scams examples I have received.
The first one is so blatant, it made no sense between the original job posting and my response for a Corporate Event Photographer.
This one is from a scammer named Jalisa Isreal

Hello, Am mack from macksennetfilms, I got your contact on MANDY.com on a position of DP/Cinematographer and wondered if you could work along side with me on my Production. Kindly confirm your availability in working with me on my production by next two weeks, below is my email kindly get back to me with your recent resume thanks. Your prompt response will be highly appreciated.
I did not responded to this dumb scam bait, (Mack Sennett was an American film actor, director, and producer, and studio head, known as the King of Comedy) and I haven’t posted anything on MANDY for ages.
So anyone using macksennetfilms@gmail.com is a scammer, a swindler, a cheater, a deceiver.
This one is the most recent. Today! Tadah! for answering a gig post for Professional Photographer for a corporate media company by (hr@harpermediaproduction.com) and answered by Chris Zaleski
Hello G…,
Thanks for your response. We are seeking a photographer for an upcoming commercial shoot. We have reviewed your submission and we’ll be happy to have you on board for the upcoming shoot. This is not a full time job, it’s a contract position.
Scope of Project: The shooting is for our client C&A Retail catalog fall collection. You will have 12 fashion outfit to cover with 6 models.
Shoot Details:
Location: Manhattan Beach Pier, CA
Date: November 2nd, 2018
Usage: Catalog advertising
Compensation: $6,000 (Creative and licensing fee)
I’ve attached some reference images in order for you to have an idea of the visual concept and overall vision for this shoot. Kindly get back to me if that’s doable and i’ll send you further details along with the contract agreement in a follow up email.
Chris Zaleski
Production Manager
Harper Media
It looked very scammy since it arrived, so I decided to take a look to that website. There is not a contact phone number but it is located in San Diego. Then I looked further, and I found that had a “Tête-à-tête” with Mara and she posted the scammy encounter on October 14, 2018. Hmmmmmm.
I read her story and I found it very similar to mine. AKA “Chris Zaleski” uses the same response like a cookie cutter just changing job few descriptions for the job position. Even the location is the same, Manhattan Beach Pier, CA
So again, I let it pass…it is not a real photo shoot.
October 30, 2018
I was hit by the same scam from Harper Media Production. Same photo gig, same location, same retainer and same pay, but being a seasoned on-location photographer, I did not fall for it, but decided to play alone to confirm my suspicions. After Chris Zaleski made contact with me offering to bring me aboard as a photographer to shoot six (6) models in twelve (12) dresses for C&A for $6.000.00 compensation and a few photo samples of the work, then I replied that the gig was doable and sent them back an email with many questions which are standard operating procedure I follow before a commercial photo shoot gig. Shortly after that, I received an email back from Chris (no phone number listed – flag #1), and no answer to any of my specific questions about the gig, scope fo work and the deliverables (flag #2), and instead I got the “Commercial Photography Agreement Contract” with the Harper Media and the C&A Logo and signed by Richard Graser, Media Manager, Harper Media Production, but with just a few general clauses and no specific clauses that I have seen in my professional experience (flag # 3). I played alone but supplied no personal info, no address, other than my website, business email and business phone number. I told Chris that I would collect the retainer and the compensation at the time of the shooting. I send them the signed contract via email and fax, (all went thru) and a request to answer all of my questions on the first email. Chris stated on the email that was attached to the contract that they would rent all the photo equipment and lights for the shoot (flag #4 – professional photographers have specific professional lenses micro-adjusted to their cameras and use specific lighting equipment that they are familiar with), and I told them that they did not need to rent any equipment, but if they insisted, then I sent them a list of what I needed for the shoot. Waited for a reply and acknowledgment…No answer (flag # 5). I kept playing alone… After that, I checked their website (looked legit – apparently) but posted no phone number (flag # 6) but a fax number which seems to be working…Also, I knew that many Cities charge a fee for either filming or still photography, and Manhattan Beach does it and it requires an application and 15 days prior shooting. So I called the Finance Dept. at Manhattan Beach, which handles these permits, and confirmed that Harper Media has not apply for a permit and did not have one issued to film and/or photograph on November 2nd at the Pier flag # 7). My suspicions were confirmed. It was an scam. To get a Craigslist gig for $6,000.00 pay day is just way Too Good to be True!!! To all readers of this post, if you ever get an similar offer, do not fall for the money, and do your due diligence first. Proceed with caution!!!
April 8, 2019
I believe this has happened to me. The company this person claims to work for is Integrity Film Production, but and they have a website. The website appears legitimate, but there is no work that can be seen. Like you said, there is unrealistic pay ($1200/3 days) and many more responsibilities than I’ve ever had as a Production Assistant. I tried to call the number provided, but it just had an automated message asking for an extension. All signs point to scam.
April 15, 2019
So you can add Mark Murrell at 76Ltd Films in London to the list. I got an offer from Mark Murrell by text, and later by email mark.76ltdfilms@gmail.com for a production job as a wardrobe seamstress. I seamed legit at first, I have a production background in film and theater, and thought it was a local gig. Next it was apparent it was in Honolulu and was a very generous offer, too much so. I checked out the company website and got very excited, big accounts slick commercials. But the wording on the offer was a little off and then noticed they had just cut and pasted the company description off the official website page onto the email. I was sent a check, supposedly for per diem and “travel arrangements” and that is when things got really smelly. The person told me they had received a message that I had gotten the check and I needed to deposit it right away so they could “release the funds” and I needed to send it to their “travel agent” first thing Monday morning. (this was all happening on Saturday) But make sure and take out my $500 for my per diem. Then repeated text “did you deposit it” and “show me the receipt” Oh, and the check was from the pet food company “Chewy.com”
So that is when I found this post and many others about this check scam operation and then I im’d the real company on facebook. 76Ltd films said not to engage with the scammer and they are aware of them and currently investigating them. Once again if it is too good to be true, it is. Oh and the bank says not to worry, the check is on hold. 😉
April 17, 2019
Go ahead and add this to the list. Integrity Film Production. They have a website, but the phone # is automated only prompting for extension #’s. None of the individuals listed on the contract or email signature have iMDB or LinkedIn profiles. Even if the website seems legit (ish), still most likely a scam.

I can confirm this is a scam. They send you a check, have you deposit it, then take the cash out send it to them through bitcoin or PayPal and then they bounce the check after they have received the money.
On another note does anyone know how to fight this and potentially get the money back?
May 8, 2019
So glad this thread exists! I almost got fooled by Integrity Film Group too. Here’s their first email below, and they followed up a few days later with a PDF contract. That’s when I got suspicious and found this thread.

I got the SAME exact message from them a couple days ago. Thank you for the warning!
June 27, 2019
Hello everyone, I also received the email from a “Steve Birch” with the SAME EXACT email. Here is what I received:
SIDE NOTE: Hi Katherine, I see you sent the person money. Did Steve Birch ask you too? I am trying to understand how the scam works. As of now they do not have any of my personal information and they do not have my address or bank info. I’m trying to understand why no one has gone to the authorities? Sending bad checks is a huge crime and the person could do time for this. Why did you have to send money? If I receive a check I’m going to call it in. This is horrible.

I just received an email from a Richard Chan at Hurrah Productions in Singapore wanting to use me as an “onset” photographer with pay in the $700-3,800 per day range. I live in Oregon and the production is supposed take place somewhere in the Mojave desert. First of all, the Mojave is a three hour drive from L.A. where there are probably hundreds if not thousands of photographers willing to take a job like that for peanuts so why hire a guy like me? Didn’t make any sense to me. They also wanted to test me out first for three days for $1,500. That didn’t seem to make sense either. I contacted Hurrah through their website and alerted them to the problem. They seem to be a legit company and I’m sure they don’t know what’s going on. The original email came from a gmail account so that’s another reason to suspect something nefarious is going on.
June 10, 2019

September 26, 2019
Yeah I just got a reply back from this guy Steve Birch with a contract attached with no outline of tasks, hahaha what a joke. Has 3 different company names. I’m just playing along since I know this is a web of lies. I deciding on asking him for business EIN, what’s the real business name under, why does his website GUIs not work, what’s the BBB complaint all about (even thou it’s on the site)! I figured I can help out to expose these parasites for what they are!
September 26, 2019
Steve Birch emailed me on Sunday, 9/22/19 about a PA position for an upcoming commercial shoot on Oct. 10-13. I let him know that unfortunately I’m not available on Oct. 12th but would like to come onboard for the other shoot dates. A day passed and I didn’t hear back so I followed up. He replied and attached a contract without even acknowledging my limited availability (which should’ve changed my pay to $900 but the contract still said $1,200. I was hesitant after hearing the unusually high PA rate and then learned that I’d receive a portion of the pay upfront. Who does that? I still signed the agreement and just received another email from a Steve today 9/26/19:
“Hello Mike,
I have received your signed contract and arrangements have been scheduled for the upcoming shoot. Your retainer deposit is scheduled to be mailed to you next week from one of the sponsor for the event along with the funds that you will use to pay for the gear rental. Kindly get back to me with your detailed information as listed below that will be used to mail the aforementioned paycheck for your retainer fee and equipment rental cost. I will send you further instruction on how to send the equipment rental fee to the vendor we’ll rent the gear from once you receive the payment so they can have them reserved & ready for you to pick up.

I instantly Googled his name and this blog post came up so thank you for saving me from being scammed. I’d like to prevent this guy from scamming anyone. Should I report him to the police? Should I receive the check first? I don’t want to give him my contact info, but I want to prevent him from taking advantage of anyone else. Thoughts
September 27, 2019
Steve Birch also contacted me and I am so sad because I was so silly to believe it was true. I hope this guy gets busted.
September 27, 2019
I hear ya! I was excited to add another credit to the resume and the pay was great for a PA position, but it seemed way too good to be true. I emailed Steve back and let him know that I don’t need the money upfront; I can wait to be paid until the last shoot day and I asked to setup a call tomorrow haha. My next email will be to request a gear rental list or the rental house they’re using and I’ll call to confirm their order. Trying to string him along for a little.
September 27, 2019
I urge everyone that gets a message from Steve Birch to file a BBB Scammer Tracker complaint.
September 27, 2019
Got the same email from Steve Birch! DONT DO IT!! October 10-13th for $1200 — NOT REAL. FAKE.
October 9, 2019
Hi! I just googled them too as I got in touch with them via the good old Craigslist, and I now feel confident is a scam. I’m eager but IM not stupid. He didn’t even want to call or talk o em on the phone. It was all too easy. Absurd mourn of money too. all for three days. THANK YOU GUYS! It was just too easy and I was getting that fishy feeling and found this site. Keep it up folks. Gotta look out fro each other.
October 9, 2019
Just reported Steven Birch & Integrity Film to the BBB Scam Tracker site. This blog post helped those smart enough to research him and his company, but he’s still scamming people. Please take a couple minutes to post your complaint on the BBB page. It’s so easy and only took me a few min. We’ve gotta stop this d-bag!
March 5, 2020
I just received the same email as a response to a craigslist post for a PA job that I applied to. The only difference is that the fake production company name they used this time was Insight Film Production. And the name of the “Production Manager” who emailed me was Evan Janney. The last email I received from him was to notify me that a fed-ex priority mail package was going to be delivered to me tomorrow in order for me to deposit a $4450 check into my bank account, deduct $400 for myself (the first part of the $1200 total payment they promised for 4 days work on set), and then use the remaining funds to pay the gear rental invoice balance to a gear rental vendor they have chosen(but have not provided any information about yet).
I will obviously not be accepting the package. I have provided the text from the first email below as a reference for anyone else who may get targeted. I’m so sorry to anyone this has happened to. It’s horrible and so disheartening. I hope this information can help someone from getting in too deep! For the record, it is March 5, 2020 and this scam is still out there.

These same people are using my identity to scam people. If you are contacted by someone claiming to be Dan Hooker (Line Producer in Los Angeles) please let me know. They have been known to use the phone number 424-265-5387 and the email address danhookerproduction@gmail.com.
Thanks.

Starting on March 17 I received an Email from a FRED TURCHETTI, Recruitment officer at LIVING FILMS PRODUCTIONS LTD, a media company based in Asia, or at least supposedly. I looked them up but not really close enough. Even though Living Film is a real company with a person named Fred Turchetti, it wasn’t until later that the number that he would text me from never did match the number on the website, but that could be for a number of reasons. As per everyone the rest of the story is pretty much like everyone else in here. I called my bank and asked them about the check but they said they could not tell. So I deposited it and then reported potential fraud. Sure enough, the check was a fake. I did some checking as to where the FedEx package came from it it was a a bail bonds company in Houston, Texas. That of course made no sense to me. Also, Fred would never answer my question about who would be the vendor for equipment rental that I was supposedly going to manage. Never got an answer there either. Also, the day i received the package from FedEx, I started getting a bunch of text asking me to hurry up and deposit it, then to pay the vendor ASAP. That was the HUGE red flag for me. He was way to anxious for me to send money. Good thing I didn’t.
Such nasty nasty people. Please BEWARE.

I have received a similar email regarding catering. It seemed professional but unusual. Since they didn’t ask for anything except an address to mail a check, I went along., as I do require a deposit to work. Yesterday, I received a check from a credit union in Georgia, mailed from a small town in Oklahoma, with a disconnected telephone number on it. The production company is in Paris, France. They have followed up about depositing it with urgency. I do not intend to deposit the check as I am sure it will bounce. I stumbled upon this thread while looking for info, about this scam and saw that it is exactly the same scam, with a different role with a film company. I have no idea how they found me, as I am a small company that doesn’t come up very high in Google search. Beware!

Hi!
Thanks for posting this. I got a weird e-mail from a producer looking for a wardrobe assistant. I had a feeling it was too good to be true, but after reading this article it was a complete scam. The producer’s e-mail was carloshuffmanproduction@gmail.com – offering to pay upfront, never mentioning the actual location of the shoot, no website attached. Anywho, I hope this might warn the other people they go after as well.
Thanks again!
