Scam Alert: Emblem Images, Production Jobs

There are a LOT of industry scams preying on people hoping for a career in film and television. They’ve been going around for years, but they’ve been particularly prevalent in 2017, 2018, and 2019.

The worst part? The scammers use the names of REAL industry professionals. Remember, the people listed here aren’t the actual scammers– they are victims, too.

**Current imposter name list as of May 2019:

  • Johann Martinez
  • Matthew Schwartz
  • Clement Cheung (Mei Ah Entertainment)
  • Chris Galipo
  • Gabriel Tyner
  • Matthew Bates (Emblem Entertainment)
  • Grant Bell
  • Brandon Taylor
  • Alan Parker
  • Graham Rich (Rich Tint Production/Film/Director)
  • Louis Rogers (Visuals by Clever Chim)
  • Boris Cifuentes
  • Brad Cruz
  • Michael LeBlanc
  • Beatrice Mercy
  • Rebel Production Studios
  • Rufus Cannon
  • Ryan Chandler
  • Robert Alexander
  • Gung-Ho Film Productions
  • Jean-Luc B. from Mar Vivo Films
  • Steve Gonzalez from Eyes and Ears Productions
  • Chikki Media Productions
  • Donald Chan at CREATV Company
  • Jean-Alexandre Luciani of Eastness Productions
  • Moviola
  • Emblem Images
  • Richard Chan – Hurrah

How does the scam work?

These guys find the information of real professionals from real job sites, film crew databases, and local state and city film directories. It begins with an innocuous text message or e-mail, “Hi, I found your information on Mandy.com/Workbook/ *Film Crew Directory Here* and think you’d be a great fit, please send me your resume”. They’ll offer you a strange rate and maybe give a few other bizarre details.

You e-mail your resume, and then you get a length reply (see below). It can be for any number of positions beyond production assistant — there’s been reports of the scam offering a position as an editor, boom operator, makeup artist, screenwriter, or camera op.

How the scam actually works: After applying (the application requires you submit your mailing address), you will receive a check within 2-3 business days for around $3,000. The scammer will ask that you deposit this check in your bank account and use the money to make some sort of dubious $500-$1000 purchase. What actually happens? The scammer voids the check, and you’re on the hook for the $500-$1000 purchase.

How to tell it’s a scam: Grammatical and spelling errors. There’s also an over explanation of expectations and job descriptions. After personally being a freelance hire for ten years, in my past experience, all details are discussed in person or over the phone. With these scams, though, there’s a lack of any sort of personal connection that is very unusual. Any real industry professional is going to want to talk to you on the phone to ensure you’re competent. **UPDATE: As of September 2017, some particularly bold scammers will actually call you on the phone. **UPDATE: As of April 2019, their grammar has gotten much better and they’re much more succinct. See bullet points below.

If you think you’ve been the victim of a production scam, alert your bank immediately.

How the scammer finds victims

The scam started on Craigslist, but unfortunately, the scammers also now prowl job boards and sites where freelancers find work. Examples may include Mandy.com, ziprecruiter.com, film industry crew lists (including on state and local film commission websites), or productionbeast.com.

(In my ten years in this career, I am yet to receive a job offer through any of those sites — it’s almost always through word of mouthAs a producer who hires crew, I never hire anyone through any of those sites. It’s usually through word of mouth or FB hiring groups.)

Remember:

  • Scammers will pose as a real company or production person, and will direct you to a legit website. Their e-mail address never has the same domain as the legit web address for the company they are impersonating; a letter may be omitted or added.
  • If a company offers direct deposit, you will receive a form in person on your start date; it will never be requested in advance via email.
  • NEVER accept advance checks from companies you’ve applied to onlineIf they want you to pay for anything in advance, ask them to call ahead and put it on their credit card.
  • If something seems off, it probably is.

The Scam as of April 2019:

There is a savvier version of this same scam floating around. Some folks might still be sending out the very wordy emails (see below), but some have picked up on brevity:

“Emblem Images would like you to join our team as a production assistant for a Ben Sherman photo shoot in San Francisco, CA as you came highly recommended by a production website linked with indeed.com.

The shoot date is September 22nd to 24th, your flight will be scheduled to leave by 11:30am on September 22nd as you’re required to work from September 22nd to 24th. Work hours are between 6pm to 1am and pay is $350 daily, so a check for $1050 will be issued at the end of the production, you’ll also receive $350 as per diem to cater for your meals throughout the shoot and this check will be issued early next week.

Send a reply if you’re available and interested in the shoot, thanks.”

This is much sleeker, but it doesn’t fall in line with the bullet points above.

    • I would suggest you add the name, John Li who purports to be from Just Media, Inc. Everything you posted regarding the process of this scam just took place with myself, including a check (I’ve NEVER been paid in advance for a job in my 25 years) which I told him I would not deposit until we spoke to work out details which I’ve been asking for, for more than a month now. I suppose that my reluctance to cash the check frustrated this asswipe and he went to the well a second time, this one under the Hurrah! productions banner to try again with yet another project, all without any attempt to make it sound any different than the Just Media scam. The only solace I can take from this attempt to waste my time and take my money is that John/Richard et al have a special place in hell waiting for them.

    • I believe The Richard Chan/ Rapheal Chan emails are bogus. Got Richard, clear scam, today, Rapheal These companies may be real but the emails are textbook scams. First claiming Hurrah Productions then Framebox Studios, these guys seem to be phonies, company site looks amazing btw lol

Got me once, i replied they sent a huge check, i never cashed contact freaked out accused me of stealing the money LOL i did nothing let him freak out, still have the check never opened it tbh

    • I also just got a strangely generic offer from John Li of Just Media Inc. I searched and found the above article. Thanks for reporting about this scam and saving me further research.

    • Here’s another one going around:

Allure Magazine is looking for an experienced and detailed oriented freelance Videographer to create content (instructional videos) for our social media & website.
Videographer needs to have or secure a good space to film that has copious amounts of natural ligh; it could be a studio, salon, or an apartment space. You will deliver the finished videos (30-45 mins) and audio files. No graphics or background music is required.
Job Type: Contract/FreelanceExperience: Videography, 1 year (Required)Location: AnywhereWork authorization: United States (Required)Benefits offered:? $5000? Credits for the videos? Credits for the studio/salon? More gigs to come

To apply, send your demo reel to: bre.kilbane@protonmail.com
      Brennan Kilbane315-889-8078Senior Writer & Editor

    • You should probably add Daniel Green to that list. Email: danielgreenproduction@gmail.com

      >There was a contract involved and everything…they are definitely getting more slick about this.

    • Richard Chan contacted me and emailed me for weeks claiming to be working with Hurrah Productions. He sent a check and everything. I still have the check. It got really weird when he called me at 10pm on night. Thanks for posting this info

    • I got 2 emails that said this:

      Message:
Hello, I saw a link to your photography portfolio on PhotoShelter. I have a photo gig at complex.com, I would love to discuss with you. Kindly email me at mitsutsuchiya001@outlook.com for more details.

      Best Regards.
      Mitsu Tsuchiya

      ~~
That isn’t Mitsu’s email, and it would be unlikely that a request would come from him, plus the vagueness in the message, and I don’t shoot fashion. So I believe that this is just another scam. I wrote to Complex, as their website asks people to do if they get a request like this, but I got no response.

Thx for this list. I was also contacted by John Li.

Months ago I tried to find anything that indicated that Richard Chan was a fraud, but it was only on Facecrook where I found any info. Google doesn’t index that info.

    • RICHARD CHAN is the name of my scammer. Same as so well described above. He claims to be having difficulties on his current shoot which would explain why he needs fast action on the crew member’s part. I rent and operate large Camera booms and he asked for me to recieve or buy production equipment and store it.
He sent a check for $4600 seemingly down on a real Mississippi bank, which identified the check as being counterfeit. I was tempted to try to torment him and draw it out a bit, but decided not to risk it. I filled out a complaint form on the FBI website but expect nothing to come from it. Unfortunately, he’ll probably use my company name in future scams.

    • Wow – thanks Laryssa. I just got one from the last name listed, Richard Chan, Hurrah Productions. Only this time he called himself Richard Benchan. From a web address of (at) h u r r ah pr od u c t io ntv (dot) c o.

Great post. As if being a freelancer isn’t hard enough.

    • Danielgreenproduction@gmail.com email address and was using Celestial Pictures. Knew it was a Scam because of the immediate cash offer of $2200 for a short film line producer. I’m in Texas… I’ve seldom been paid even close to a living wage much less that sort of cash for only a week’s work. Yup.. SCAM.. (ok that and Celestial Pictures is a Asian company.) Grammar was ok except for the dreaded “kindly reply with updated resume etc.. ” This is Texas.. Kindly does not come at the beginning of a sentence.. Just at the end.. Thank you kindly for your post. 🙂

    • Add these two names now. Haha! Kwasa Honda & Josh Billy or Billy Josh. Thank you for taking the time to warn us!

    • I’ve been on the film business for nearly 30 years and I have never, ever been offered and willing to paid me upfront.

I knew I shouldn’t have filled out that application form, but recently, a lot of legitimate production companies have been doing the paperwork online and way in advance before production starts. These people/companies I know because I have worked with them in the past, so the business relationship was already established.

You can add two more names to the scam name list.

Andrew Lau (from Just Media Inc.)
Richard Benchan (from Redbridge Production TV)

    • Just got one from +1 (409) 444-2137, by the name of RICHARD BENCHAN.

Checks all the boxes for the scam. Thanks for posting this- just saved me a huge headache.

    • this really admire your article

    • Please add Lee Gladstone, Connie Finnan, and David Richard to this list. Haven’t gotten repeated contacts from Mr Lee.

    • Same here… Sounded suspicious, and did a very quick research. It’s a scam…

Here is what I received in the first email:

“Good Day I’m David Hoberman affiliate DOP for Mandeville Films , I saw your profile posted on Mandy.com, Its a pleasure to inform you about an upcoming short film project in your area Titled (Pained) Start date: DEC – 20th, pay is $2,000 we are in need of DIRECTOR OF PHOTOGRAPHY kindly reply with your updated resume to ( davidhoberman3@gmail.com ) for more consideration thank you have a great day.”

      Watch out!

    • I swear I get these so often now. The newest one is Nick Romano. info.n.romanoproductionandco@gmail.com
Same cut and paste email. This one was an editor job for $5000.

    • I had someone set up a domain close to my actual domain to send email that looked like it was coming from me. Then then tried to hire people impersonating my company. They put help wanted ads all over the internet. A friend also had someone impersonating him. I always ask a lot of specific questions of people looking to hire me or my company. Once you ask a specific or technical question they usually give up.

    • I think I just got one from imposter Russell Morton at Hurrah Prouducitons. March 25, 2020

    • just got one from JORDAN KASSAN thank you for heads up

    • Remember, no one should really be hiring for jobs like this for at least another couple months, thanks Covid-19

    • Just got a scam text May 3 2020

Hi Andy,I’m David Probitas with Big Blue Production. I found you vi the Reel Network. Can you make yourself available for a shoot between the 8th-14th of June for a short Film, having in mind the Covid-19 situation. Can you confirm your availability for Cam.Op/A role?

    • I have been contacted twice by David Probitas bigblueproductionthai@gmail.com . I did not have availability for the first shoot (March of 2020). I was contacted again with an almost verbatim copy of the first email. The thing that tripped me up was the mention of a ‘nearly completed shoot in Nevada’. I made the assumption that COVID-19 had played a part in the delayed shooting dates. The first time I was instructed to take possession of a camera at my home address. The second time, no such detail was added. I did receive a full screenplay – sci-fi short (decent little piece).

Check for $4963 was mailed and I most certainly did try to cash it. It came back to my bank with a note to ‘verify sender’. But I could not get any additional information. I called it in to local police, they just said there’s nothing they can do.

What I don’t understand is what they are phishing for?? My address? My DOB? My phone number??? All of that is available online. I can only guess they were trying to access my bank account. Which is hilarious, because it’s been empty for going on some time now.

Thank you for putting up this information. I feel a little sheepish. Especially because the hours were listed as 10am-6pm. 7 days of work. Gah! Located in small-town, rural, Tennessee

    • David Rashima from Katana Group. He has so far used 2 stolen phone numbers, and he even sent me a script. It was John Carpenter’s Dark Star word for word with a different title. My check is in the mail. I am filing a complaint with the FTC as soon as it arrives.

    • Add William Bashin, Able Films, 9/20

    • Also got the William Bashan from Able Films.

    • Do you know if this is a real recruitment email or is this a scam?

  1. This happened to me the person used the alias name of Christos Kanakis movie producer (Cube Productions).
I went all the way, Had the money in my account. Got his instructions to take out cash after I left the bank. I was trying to figure out how I was going to pay the vender and for the equipment. My bank caught it later thank God after the questioned me. I was thinking who is stupid enough to send a check to me first before I even meet them, they must be throwing away money. They don’t have any significant information from me. I ended up telling them I was a private scam investigator and they were under arrest. I called them and grilled them like a police man asking their name and who do they work for. Then they hung up and never responded by text again. I should have said we just tracked your address.

    • I just received an “offer” from the same guy. THANK YOU for posting this information. I knew something seemed off. I kept googling different things and finally found this post. I emailed them and told them I was no longer interested and not to contact any more. They do have my street address, phone number and email address…should I be worried?

    • This guy just texted me tonight. Thank you for posting about this scam. It was strange to receive a text and not an email or phone call. They found me on Indeed.com. The post was for a Videographer and Digital Media Specialist – Empire Sound Productions – Denver, CO 80205. The description of the job covered any possible crew position in any stage of production. But there is one bullet point that stood out: “Travel to various locations including construction sites to acquire photo and video footage for editing,” I thought this was for training video work something related to the construction industry. But the text from “Christos” was for a short film production….this was completely different and off. Red flag! I have learned to google any job offer now before taking next steps. Thanks for warning us.

    • I received the same email from Christos Kanakis offering me a dp job in his short, filming in Denver! Thank you for the warning, I had a feeling that something was wrong. Supposed to have an interview today, but he just send an email that everything prosponded till first week of July, however, he sent me a check, which I need to deposit to my bank. Does anyone know, what should I do with this check? Thank you!

    • Check will be no good and will bounce in 2 or 3 business days. Don’t spend any of your monies.

    • Thank you, Benjamin!

    • Hey DeVon B.,

I know the feeling. I knew it in my gut it was off somehow. Even my good friend, if you feel it in your gut it is not right, then go with it.

Their check hasn’t arrived to me yet. Since it is being mailed by USPS, I will report them to the Post Office and the local Police for MAIL FRAUD once I receive the check!

I got a tracking # of the envelope, so they can determine (if no return address is on the envelope) where it was mailed from and from who.

  2. Here’s what I got, thanks for sharing the information.

    • Hey Rich,

This is a scam. I got the same email in Kansas City. I called Intermountain Film Productions, and they confirmed it. Whoever is doing this is using their name without their consent.

    • Hi,
I’ve received the same email from a “Joe Leone”, saying he found me on LinkedIn. It’s vague and has weird grammar, so I came here right away to check if they’re mentioned. Yup! So thank you!

    • Got this email and I knew it was fake. Just thought I’d add to this. From PantelionMovies@gmail.com.

      Hi

I’m Steven Nick, A producer for Pantelion films I saw your profile posted on film production directory, I want to inform you about a upcoming short film project coming up in your area Titled ( THANKFUL ) Start date: May 20th-24th- 2021?, pay is $1800, I’m in search for effective PRODUCTION ASSISTANT, kindly reply with your updated resume for more information and consideration.

      Thank you

  3. I’m happy to see so many responses on this site, indicating that these guys aren’t fooling very many people. Don’t they realize that by using real companies’ names on their checks, and by sending them through the mail to commit interstate fraud, that they are playing fast and loose with the US government, and specifically the FBI? I guess you don’t have to have any brains to do this stuff.

  4. What about Cim Film Studios. They want me to do a pilot for a show. But want me to pay half of it.

    Post a Reply
    • Hey Nic, I got contacted yesterday with the same message for a tv show pilot – I saw them on our a local program and called for information.

    • Are they legit? I’m supposed to send them $5k and they will put up the other $5k for my pilot on wecooktv. A Michael Thorton spoke to me and said the $5k would be for the rights to the pilot. I’m really hoping this isn’t a scam . Please if anyone has any solid information about this- Cimfilmstudios wecooktv network?
I don’t mean to be so doubtful or ungrateful if this company is real. It’s just really hard to believe I have another chance at doing something I really love and thought it was just a dream – yah know?
Please anyone with solid information post something. I am supposed to give my answer and money in the next few days and if they are legitimate. I don’t want to miss this opportunity. Thank you

    • I doubt it. Any genuine offer of purchase of rights would be accompanied by appropriate paperwork.

    • I’ve had the same offer from Cim Studios, and it’s rather strange that is all has to happen so fast!
What did you find out Nic?

    • Hi Nic!

I’m in the exact same boat!!! What did you find out?
Is this company legit? I potentially have some amazing sponsors but I don’t want to involve them until I fully vet this company. I would love to connect and chat with you. Are you on Instagram?

    • Hello. Any update on this company? I too, have been offered a pilot however have been asked to come up with $5,300 by 9/25/19. Have any of you found out whether or not this is legit?

    • what did you find out about cim film studio?
I got offered same things about a cooking show pilot,
and I could get sponsors.. etc..
It looks like the company pays $5.7k and the sponsor pays $5.3k
but if I don’t get a sponsor I have to cover the $5.3k?

      what is this company?

    • I got the same offer this week, in person. Anyone followed through with this and found it to be legit? Also a pilot for the new season of a legitimate food show, and they told me I have to cover half of the production costs which I found odd.

Anyone got anymore info on this?

    • Did you ever end up following through with CIM? About a year I was also asked to do the same but I didn’t follow through. It sounded too good to be true, though it was tempting. Hi

  5. I got the same thing today. Where can i report it? i did receive a check which I honestly never deposited. But is there a place to report these guys?

    • I received the same email except he said his name was Zack Richardson.

    • I have this exact email verbatim except he said he was Corey Tong from Marvivo Films.

  8. Black Studio Productions is a scam. They Cast me for a commercial off actors access ( just my headshot alone) and then immediately pulled down the breakdown. After an exchange of incredibly lengthy emails and giving information. They offered to mail me a 5000 dollar check for two days work. Big red flag for a non union project. The staff listed on their website had no credits, no previous projects, not even social media. So I reversed image searched the photos they had posted of them and they were all stock photos of models or what not. The “ casting director” goes by the name of Timothy Connolly so watch out for him.

    • I had a similar email from Dharma Productions but their email was much longer. I don’t think I should go forward with them, correct? This is a scam?

    • I also received one from dharma Productions. They sent me a check for 4,950.00 I haven’t cashed it thanks to this article. I did a little research and found that the phone # in the email was wrong and couldn’t find his name associated with the company at all. Beware “Jordan Kassan” Claimed to be with Dharma Productions for a short film “A Place Beyond”. I was excited then sad because of lame bullshit. It’s okay though.

    • Jordan Kassan of “Dharma Productions” is still at it. Now sending texts instead of spam emails.

  15. Thank you for your post. I had one today from “Michael with Eastness Production.” I figured when he used district and had some gramaticaly errors, it was a scam. Good to confirm it from this post!

    • On January 10, I received a Linkedin message from Christopher Proana, a recruiter on Linkedin, to work as a Production Assistant for an
upcoming short film project with Dharma Productions. I exchanged emails
with someone named Jordan Kassan with further details and I signed an
engagement agreement. They sent me a check via priority mail to be used
for equipment rental. I deposited the checked and transferred money to the
rental contact via Zelle as instructed. The money was transferred to the
contact successfully, but the check bounced — which resulted in a net loss
      of $5,000 from my account.

I’m alerting our film commission in Jacksonville, FL.

Thanks for your response, I went through your information and I can honestly say it looks great. My name is Awini Rowan and I just recently joined Hurrah Production (based out of Singapore) as a Producer and also a Production Coordinator.

We are presently shooting a couple of scenes for a feature film project in Southern Nevada and with all things being equal we will be rounding up in less than two weeks.

Production of our new project is set to run between 22nd & 23rd of December and all information concerning the locations of the shoot will be relayed to you by our location manager prior to our arrival. The title of the short-film we will be working on in a few weeks is “A PLACE BEYOND” and it’s a simple Sci-F short.

You will have a highly essential responsibility for the Project by taking on the role of the Camera Operator. You will also be charged with receiving and holding on to a few of the camera equipment & accessories for the production crew ahead of our arrival and possibly have it set up if need be.

I need someone who can perform his/her duties with resourcefulness and is also proactive in dealing with problems and queries. I have hired people in the past who did not live up to expectation and ended up setting back production, I do not want to make the same mistake here. I would love for you to make time for a “Group meet” which will take place on the 16th & 17th of December, about a week before the project commences. This is so we can all meet and discuss the production plan in more detail and make sure everyone understands their role a little more as to be well prepared for the shoot. We will have the set ready and put in place that same week just before the project start date.

We’re taking care of the things needed for the project and I’ll be sure to keep you informed of our activities and also prepare a shooting & work schedule for both days.

Your wage for being a part of the Group meeting will be $750 for both days and full daily payment (and possible bonuses) for the 2-day shoot will be given at each day’s end. • Now this is the scam I got today 2/14/20 even after I replied back and told them some one one sent me the exact same script/script last year… I went to the Hurrah website and it was very convincing, but there is no Omar listed and called Singapore and found out the number to the studio is not in service. So I emailed the company using a link from their site, Then Omar, or someone claiming to be Omar called me on the phone and tried to convince me he was legit! These people went to a great deal to set up the whole operation: Website facebook youtube vimeo and all the social media groups. Not sure if it is a an actual company or not because there is no way to get into contact with individuals on the website to verify anyone

  28. How do you choose the best choose the best service among the ones listed here?

  29. You should update this list with the name “Jordan Kassan” claiming to work for Dharma Productions. Offered me a Camera Operator job, googled his name and this page immediately came up with the same “A Place Beyond” short film as listed in earlier comments. Seems like he’s running a pretty convoluted scam, luckily I’ve been doing this long enough to know to look right away if a client is a real person or not.

Always look up potential clients on social media and have a phone call if you don’t know them. If they have no social media or website presence whatsoever and they want you for a video/photo/editing gig, they’re probably scamming you.

    • Just got a text message from “Jordan Kassan” for camera operator position under Dharma Productions. I immediately looked them up online. The production company seems reputable but mr. Kassan has a bad reputation. I’m not sure what they are looking to get out of these games but my first thought was…this is probably some bull shit. I will past the text message below. (Nevada phone number)

“…I’m Jordan Kassan with Dharma Productions. I found you via the Production Beast Network. Can you make yourself available for a shoot on the 1st-7th of June for a short Film, having in mind the Covid-19 situation. Can you confirm your availability for Cam.Op role?”

    • Yep, just got spam text from “Jordan Kassan,” who claimed he got my number from “Studio Binder.” I think Studio Binder is associated with ProductionBeast, which I do have a profile on. But I can’t find anyplace where my phone number is listed, there or IMDB or anywhere else. Does anyone know where these assholes are getting the numbers?

  30. I responded back with the name and phone # of the local police department:

With so many scams out there, I would feel more comfortable with a phone call to be sure this is a legit project. My assistant is Ken Wallentine and is helping me while I have surgery this week so please feel free to chat with him for any and all details. Once we are clear this is a real project, I’ll send over my resume.

Thanks for your response and I did receive the email, I went through your information and I can honestly say it looks great. I’m Russel Morton, the Production Coordinator at Hurrah Production. I would also like to apologize for the late response as well, we all are in very unpleasant times as it is and with the Covid-19 problem its been a bit difficult to stick with a date, however, we will plan accordingly and if the situation around changes which we all hope it does, all the better. We will have the set ready and put in place that same week just before the project start date.

We’re taking care of the things needed for the project and I’ll be sure to keep you informed of our activities and also prepare a shooting & the work schedule for the days.

This seemed already too fishy. I read the script, that was allegedly written by April Smith (a real screenwriter) but it was so badly written and full of spelling errors, that it looked clear it was a scam. I then decided to search online for “Johann Martinez Productions” the company that allegedly owns the script. That’s when I found your posting and comment thread. Comparing the emails, it was immediately clear that I was being targeted by a scammer. I wasn’t sent any checks and was able to catch this scam early.

So please, add these names to the list:

    Milon Media Productions
    April Smith

Thank you for this useful post!

  35. Thanks for posting all this. I still dont quite understand what the scammer is getting out of it, unless it is my bank info when my bank puts through the check, but then it would be returned to ‘their’ bank, not to the scammer directly.

In any case, I just got one as a text on my phone, from a name that appears here on another post, Bishop Foster from Umoon Productions. Yes, I researched the company, it is a big and legitimate Production house in Bangkok. No, Mr Foster does not appear on their website. Yes, the email address was nearly identical, with the addition of one letter. And a different mail server of course.

The language and tone matches many of those listed by other folks here. “Found you vi the Reel Network, can you make yourself available for a shoot between June 29th-5th July for a short film, considering the Covid-19 situation. Can you confirm your availability for Cam.Op/A role?”

I texted back, the scammer said he/she was in transit, could I email resume/work info. to me at “umoonfilmproduction@gmail.com”
I have neither time nor interest in playing games with these jokers, I think i will just sent a nasty message back. Unfortunately I included my full name in the text reply, I am pretty easy to find!
Thanks again Laryssa, for setting up this very valuable discussion.

    • This was my question too. Everything they got is easily available online. I am still trying to figure this out. My scam came from David Probitas Big Blue Thai Productions (legit production company out of Thailand) bigbluethaiproductions@gmail.com +1(773)377-9522, +1(775)384-0957

    • Mine was Chris Volland with Micheal & Peterson Productions. Their number was also 773-377-9522.

    • Seems like (773) 377-9522 is their new number of choice. I’ve been contacted by “Chris Volland” from “Morgan and Preston” (another real company). They’ve changed up some of the details, but everything feels really familiar to what’s been described. Thanks for the heads up!

    • I also just got a text from Chris Volland at Morgan and Preston. Suspicious af.

  36. Thank you so much for creating this thread!! Thanks to finding this blog, I was able to KNOW for a fact I was being set up. After I deposited the check, he wanted me to cash app him $2500 for the “art director.” When I called him out for being a scammer- he disappeared and the check I had deposited withdrew automatically from my account because it wasn’t real to begin with.

  37. Got this text message last week from (912) 590-1597:

Judah, we want your best story concept. enamac.com/GKg36VQ

There is no domain enamac, the number can’t be called, and I didn’t bother to click on this link, realizing it’s fraud of some sort.

  38. I got scammed by an individual claiming to be “Steve Gonzalez” from “Eyes and Ears Productions.” He “offered” me an “editing job, but instead, he sent me a massive check without completing any work. Lost $2,000+, filed a motion with my bank, and reported the scammer to law enforcement. And to make matters worse, the scammer still contacted me even after I filed a police report.

    • My make up artist daughter got a scam call from the same number 773-377-9522

  39. I got this email from a person who is posing as a filmmaker named Camila O’Hara Tanabe (who is listed on IMDB):

“Hello I’m Camila, I saw your profile on Mandy, I would like to hire you for a film shoot as the Subtitler, please kindly email me back your resume or any Web link to look out on here so I can go through your credits and get back to you on the full job details thanks.”

They asked me to deposit a check for them which was to be an up-front payment of subtitling fees, as well as money for buying lighting equipment. The check bounced – the bank said the check was “altered/false”. The person posing as Camila said it was an error of some kind. I figured this is a scam and blocked the person’s texts. Not a word since.

I should also say that in several email exchanges (from this address: info.camilaoharaproduction@gmail.com) I was sent a script that contained scant dialogue (and it was only 8 pages long) but more strangely: no direct answers to questions about fee amounts and the need for a subtitler for weeks or months when there is little dialogue in the script. After I stopped the texting I received no further emails. This pretty much confirms it was bogus. I’ve not confirmed it, but I imagine Camila Tanabe is a legitimate filmmaker and is also a victim of this scammer.

  41. It was interesting to read here that you don’t want to brush your teeth too much because it can remove enamel and cause gum recessions. This seems like a really good reason why regular dental cleanings and check-ups are important.
I would imagine that a good dentist will be able to spot things like that and help correct it early so it won’t lead to worse issues down the road.

  42. I got a text from Chris Volland from Morgan and Preston. Also the same number 773-377-9522. He then emailed me about the job saying a check would be sent beforehand. And this job was for wardrobe but he mentioned makeup kits for me to use. 2 different positions! He also wanted me to give him my address to send the check.

We are presently working on a short film which I’m Designing and directing the production aspect, although work hasn’t commenced and we should start working on the film in next couple of weeks the schedule and start date for the position is MAR 2 – 6th 2020. Pre-production run through next week for the main project preparation.

  43. Didn’t get an offer but the same similar setup from 775-384-0957:

“Hey, how’s your weekend. I’m glad to reach out to you, I’m William Bashan with Able Films. I got your contact on the Reel Network as Camera Operator/Assistant. I hope the pandemic situation hasn’t been too hard on you.”

Couldn’t find the person’s name anywhere and there is an Able Films company overseas but nothing that I can find connected with him. I’ve done camerawork but never heard of the generic-sounding “Reel Network” and upon Googling it I’ve found it is an entertainment website that labels itself “Reel Updates On Breaking News & Gossip In Black Hollywood” (I’m white and that’s obviously not a place with my crew resume). So yeah, scam.
